Hi PHers,

I continue looking for a medium SUV car for my parents. I have come across the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross.

It ticks a lot of their boxes but I am not sure on two aspects, reliability and parts availability and prices.

I seem to recall that Mitsubishi have historically had a good reputation for reliability of their 4x4s. Does this reputation still apply to their newer cars ?

The second worry is the price and availability of parts.
The Eclipse Cross did not sell in big numbers and Mitsubishi pulled out of the UK market in 2021.

Does this mean that availability of parts could be an issue in the future or where they are available, exorbitant prices, as the car gets older ?

Would this put you off buying one?

I'd potentially buy a Mitsubishi, but not an Eclipse Cross. They aren't supposed to be that good anyway, although I'd imagine they're pretty reliable. Loads of better cars to chose from that still have a network in place.

Mitsubishi have pulled out of the UK and withdrawing from Europe. There are still dealers around, but my local one no longer sells Mitsu cars and stocks XBUS and Ssangyong.

IM Group of Subaru fame have taken over spares support, but they are now a company that have given up on cars and are more into finance and property.

That said I was surprised to get a recall notices for the airbag (widespread Takata issue) and a voluntary one when the car was 10 years old for a new valve body on the automatic gearbox.

I had an Eclipse Cross for the day when my old Colt was in for a service a few years ago. It was the 1.5 turbo engine. Quite a pleasant car overall and well equipped, even had a panoramic roof. Lane departure warning was quite annoying on B roads.

I'd say it depends on how long you want to run it for. I imagine it'll score well on value for money. In my experience Mitsubishi parts are quite expensive, and if supply is limited that could be made even worse.

Haven’t IM (official importers) guaranteed part availability for something like 10 years?

Still see plenty of IM group dealerships with Mitsubishi’s for sale so I personally wouldn’t worry about getting it fixed or serviced.
