started work on the car today

the v8 i picked up on thursday is now in my workshop and i'm starting to tackle the big list of niggley jobs on it which need doing
i took the door off tonight and packed up the hinge so it shuts properly
god this thing is easy to work on complred to the lotus it's replaced
spedo is the next job
anyone know what goes wrong here ? spedo,sensor,wiring ?
all advice welcome as i've ordered manuals etc but they aren't here yet

What's actually wrong with the speedo? Mine was very erratic - turned out to be a loose earth on the back of the gauge.

is getting the guage out hard ?
i haven't got a manual yet you see
i'll check the earth first
the fuel guage doesn't work either but it's only the sender , i can get another one next week

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but it may be possible to remove it without taking the dash out. The problem with this is you'll have to do it with your head in the footwell and by feeling around as you won't be able to see much.

It's far easier to access the gauge with the dash out, but removing the dash is a bit of a pig of a job (having done it myself recently) so it might be worth checking the sensor first.

How did you get the door off, I need to take mine off and re align, have looked at a few times but not had a proper look, any advice ?

door alignment and removal is simple on these things
remove the door panel
remove the quaterlight frame leaving glass runner and motor undisturbed
there are two brackets bolted to the top and bottom of the door held in place by 2 13mm af bolts
the long middle bolt is 17mm af and this goes through the bracket in a plastic bush into the rest of the car
remove these as well and off comes the door
good hint : once you have shimmed up the bottom door bracket to get rid of the sag nip up the 17mm bolts but leave the 13 s finger tight close the door and get the gaps lined up before you tighten these up
don't do what i did and refit the quaterlight frame before you have aligned the door as you won't be able to get at the bolts
if the above makes no sense once you have had a go get in touch
