Hi there everyone,

My card was taken yesterday and there have been a couple of largish payments have been made, £240 and £480 where the pin was used.
The bank have basically said they don’t believe it wasn’t me and aren’t going to refund me. Card has been cancelled.

What can I do?

Don't keep your PIN with your card

Where did they get the PIN from?

Or are you suggesting the payments couldn't have been made using your PIN as they couldn't have it?

I don’t know where they got the pin from. All my pins are the same so maybe they saw me enter it? they aren’t kept with the card.

I know why the bank doesn’t believe me because I wouldn’t either. But I can’t really afford to just suck up £700.

Have you spoken to the Bank. If you say they are not your transactions and you are telling the truth they will not honour the transactions. They will effectively be on hold or withdrawn. The onus is on the Bank to prove it is you . They won't tell you what the transaction was or who it was with but unless you always buy balloons on your card and it's a transaction for balloons they will accept it's not you . The most relevant question is did you leave your pin with your card , or was it written down and stolen with your card. If so this changes what I have written.

Had you used the credit card and PIN at a cash point or dodgy location recently? They used to skim debit cards and use button cameras to see PIN numbers.

Just to clarify - your card has been stolen by a stranger - not taken by someone you know?

Where did the payments take place? Local to you, or hundreds of miles away?

My card was once skimmed at a petrol station near Rochdale,

Someone tried to use it to sign up for an adult TV channel in Hungary.

Fortunately the card was blocked by the bank, I only found out when I went in a motorbike shop to buy some spare parts.

Used your card anywhere there?

The odds of the PIN being guessed are miniscule so it must have been readily identifiable - although skimming has occurred in the past it's not very common and the culprit generally then tries for the maximum amount available from the ATM.
Are you sure it's not family/close friend ?

Don't have the same pin number for cards and accounts.

How did someone get your card?

It could be "shoulder surfing" while you were at an ATM or having to input your PIN at a till.

The bank should be able to tell the exact time and place where the card was used, try getting hold of CCTV to investigate further.

Have you used the pin at all in Cardiff? Most payments are contactless below a certain amount so should be easy to remember.

Just tell the bank the last place you used the card with the pin.
