Good luck. Keep your head down. I know your hands are probably full right now (considering what your profession is) but I just wanted to say that all of us Floridians feel your pain (literally)...

(Katrina in case anyone was wondering)

Batten down the hatches, Jimbeaux!

Good Luck and God Bless!

I'll try to send some of this high pressure sitting over Arizona your way, maybe Katrina will venture out to sea and die.

Latest: Strong Cat 5 (175 mph winds). Direct track to New Orleans. If Lake Poncetrain (sp?) floods then expect massive property damage.

In a direct slap in the face to those that rely on public transport and are without cars, up to 100,000 may be stuck riding it out in the SuperDome (sports complex) in downtown New Orleans.

Damage is expected to be extensive. Hurricane force winds projected all along the storm track until it hits the Tennessee/Kentucky State borders where it will assume the (still damaging) effects of a tropical storm.

There is a slight chance that it may track slightly more West/NW which would be good for New Orleans as that is a less populated area along the Louisiana/Texas border.

This is THE major hurricane this year.

PS: Thanks in advance to all of the UK based electrical workers that will, no doubt, respond to the call and fly in to help restore power as they did in Florida last year. IT IS APPRECIATED!

Isn't New Orleans actually below sea level (by a couple of metres)? No wonder they are evacuating given the storm surge.

Best of luck, Jimbeaux, and let us know you're all right, if you can.

I can't imagine 175 mph winds. Hurricane force winds extend out about 130 miles from the center. When it was supposed to cross Florida (much earlier on) I had rather hoped it would, as it would hit land while it was still a 1 or a 2, and maybe diminish before it had gotten too strong, but now it's a 5, and just is beyond imagining. This is the most frightening thing I've ever seen.

1 to 20 Ft. below sea level, when it rains they have to pump it out as fast as it falls or they get some flooding.

Not looking good!

Hang on Louisiana!

Good luck guys

...and who'd have thought you'd be complaining about a blow job heh?

But seriously, been to Florida once, loved it - nice place (especially off the tourist trail) so wishing you all the best.

Thanks folks. I do have my hands full. This is looking more and more like the "Big One". Time is running out for any mercy. Yes, New Orleans is a "bowl" that is six feet below sea level. We have evacuated 1.2 million people, but approximately 100,000 are using the Superdome as a "refuge of last resort". The inner city of New Orleans has some less fortunate folks that have no personal transportation and must stay at the sports center. We have prepositioned nearly 300 semi trucks of water, ice, MREs, plastic sheeting, baby formula, etc. Our search & rescue and commodity distribution plans are ready to go. The President has given us a prelandfall emergency declaration, thus freeing up federal resources for our state. The worse case would place 25 feet of water in the New Orleans Central Business District...that's right, three stories up! Let's hope against that. I got a random call from a lady in England needing to relay sheltering advice for her sister here on holiday. I think she was surprised when I called her back with information! I have been doing interviews with CNN, Fox, MSNBC, and Radio Scotland, so maybe you will catch me. Anyway, I will be on shift for about 14 hours tomorrow. I do not know if and how long we will be without utilities, so I will report in when I am able.....talk to you all soon!

Oh yes - I'd forgotten you were homeland security too. The best of British to you over the next few hours.

Hope to see you on the other side saying "Well we were prepared for the worst but at least that didn't happen"

Good luck

Yes, sucks big time for us. I personally live about 12 miles north of lake Ponchatrain. Moved there only last november and just finally finished furnishing the place. Wife and I left at midnight on Sat. and are now at my wife's aunt's house in houston. Had to grab the pictures and important papers and load my 2 dogs up. With all that to pack, we took the 4door Accord. My dream car (the S) is in the garage of my brand new house awaiting its fate. I'm just hope its not a total loss.
