Going to work this morning and fifth gear exploded
with a nasty metallic crunching sound, managed to
crawl into work where I am now writing this.
Does anyone know the likely cost of fixing this?
or the cost of a second hand box from a breaker?
Also does anyone know if you can get the gearbox
out on it's own or do you have to take the engine out with it? If it will come out on it's own I would do
it myself but I dont have the space and equiptment
needed to take the engine and box out together.
Gutted :( :(

No idea on cost, but the gearbox can be removed on it own.According to my dealer it's quiet a straight forward job to do.

Worth ringing round a few TVR specialists to get a few prices, if they quote parts and labour that should also give you some idea of the amount of work involved. Any unusual noises before the failure? Problems like this seem very rare and I had got the impression that the transmission was generally pretty reliable on these cars.

If anythig's going to break on these boxes though Peter it's 5th gear. It's on it's own in the rear tailshaft housing, meaning you can usually limp to your destination as the other gears aren't affected until the little bits start migrating into the main gearbox casing.

It usually happens with no warning, and is sudden and total break of 5th gear. I understand there's an upgrade by people like competition transmission systems (www.gearboxman. co uk or something ..) that directly addresses this known weak point on the T5 .. something to do with the gear held by a cirlcip and it breaks and the gear walks off the back of the shaft? .. ?

if you have a warranty it should cover it as it's a proper mechnical breakage little likelyhood of them wriggling out of that one i would have thought?

Yep thats how it went just doing 60mph and it
made a crunching sound and I lost drive. Slipped
it into 4th and the other gears are all o.k.
If the box will come out on it's own I will get
one from a breakers and do it myself.
Anyone know if they will all fit? Are the S model
boxes different? Gutted as since the engine rebuild a year ago I have used the car as a daily driver and
had no problems till now

I would recommend taking your tuscan to Autocraft in Salisbury; just had my clutch sorted out down there is a matter of days (rather than days). I also believe they have a spare T5 gearbox that is in the Tuscan available and they also have just had the gearbox reconditioned from my GT40 at Autocraft also and it is now fantastic. I would highly recommend their services.

Plan to phone Douglass Valley in the morning
and might have a bash at fitting it myself as
I have a couple of days off later in the week.
