Mobile Phone Insurance Issu
Discussion
So I have contract iPhone for my daughter and use mobile phone insurance through a major high street building society, only second time 15 years I have ever claimed.
My daughter dropped her phone and got it wet, it’s iPhone 11 on contract phone a well known water network. I claimed on building society insurance stating it was supplied by the blue network. This network does not lock handsets.
Insurance took excess etc, sent me a refurbished handset however it’s locked to a well known green yellow network only and therefore useless. I have contacted the large consumer device insurer my building society use and they asked for proof that blue network provided it which I have sent and demanded a replacement device unlocked, they have replied today stating it’s for me to get unlocked and they will reimburse me, so far blue network say they can’t and I can’t get hold of the others yet waiting for a call back.
Anyone had this?

Can unlock it through the website https://ee.co.uk/plans-subscriptions/mobile/settin...
I'd take it to your local independent mobile phone repair shop, usually numerous on any high street and ask them if it can be unlocked, you will get a straight forward answer.
I was under the impression I phones are particularly difficult to have unlocked if you are not the original owner but i'm no expert on it

Just push back - the insurance is to place you in the same position prior to loss. That hasn't happened. Ask for formal complaints procedure. Follow it. No luck go to Omsbudsman.
They have cocked up, the 3rd party they use to provide replacement refurbished phones have sent you a locked one by mistake. They should correct this.
(based on my 14 years in the insurance industry, specifically claims)

No, however I am happy that your insurer has actually supplied a replacement.
We have insurance with Nationwide so if it’s them it’s good to know.
It's not really a proper replacement if it doesn't work on your contracted network. We have insurance with Nationwide so if it’s them it’s good to know.
It's like getting a replacement TV and finding it can only be used wirh Sky, when you watch freeview.

The insurer (not the building society) asked for proof of purchase which I got the device agreement from Blue network. They then write back thanks get it unlocked and we cover the costs. It's like getting a replacement TV and finding it can only be used wirh Sky, when you watch freeview.
Don't see why they asked for proofs, since my contract is with the BS I assume I will have to speak to them and complain. Just seems borderline a failure on the insurers side.
I have spoken to someone I know at the yellow/green network and they are trying to get an unlock, it didn't go through on the website when I tried the IMEI. Also an EU or change to legislation a year or so ago that I believe banned locking devices as they don't do it at all now as I understand it.
