There is a lot written on here about the benefit of a pre-cat GRIFF due to its superior noise...

What kind of volume difference are we talking?
Exactly which models are the loudest?

and....
How does the noise of the V8S compare?
(surely these are all pre-cat...)

Noise is important to me :)

It's not just volume, but tone as well. Especially in tunnels As a guide IMHO you're looking at 100-105 db for a standard pre cat, 90-100 db for a 500. Pre-cat seems to give a harder, sharper, less muted rasp at the top end - I'm talking standard here, and in my opinion only.

Bible gives values as follows:

500/Chim/Cerb: 90db
Griff 4.x: 103-106db
V8S: 102-106db

db varies one day to the next and according to where it's measured though. A much better measuring instrument is the collection of hairs on the back of your neck.

Not all V8Ss are pre-cat, some of the later one's have them fitted. Mine's a pre-cat which at a track day last year measured 109db.

Wedge V8s have no competition in the NOISE department.

A blood curdling roar, which can quite often lead to other vehicles 'freezing' in shock and awe, as you overtake, and a cacophany of car alarms in your wake.

Who needs drugs ?

My V6 S3 was measured at 123.5db at constant 4500 revs at a distance of 1 meter which I think means that the V8 wedges have a lot of competition.... it is decatted with a custom made crossflowed exhaust with twin 2.5 inch tailpipes.... and in this warm weather the pops and bangs when the engine is overunning is awesome...

If you want to hear a nice Griff go to tvrbliss.co.uk. tvr videos and download any or all of the 3 vids of Ed Tilsleys Griff laying down some rubber. It sounds awesome.

V8S 106Db who measured this as mine was measured at SCH3 at 118Db at 4000rpm and like Doddze says his V6 measured 123Db, albeit with a custome straight through exhaust. At the same venue Hoover's precat 4.3 grif also with custome straight through exhaust measured 119Db??? But I must say go for the BEST noise not necessarily the loudest? For me the noise of Hoovers Grif was just awesome, best noise I have heard from ANY car

The Wedge and V8S noise is IMHO next best.

The timber of the exhaust makes the most difference IMO. Some of the more high pitched exhausts sounded a lot louder, but actually didn't rate too high on the db meter.

THe design of the pipes can really effect how the exhaust sounds, so exactly the same car with a different exhaust makes a different noise. For this reason I believe you cannot say which car will sound the best based upon which model it is, unless you are refering to the original factory fitted exhaust. I suspenct there are very few older cars actually running standard exhausts these days.

To sum up my drivel, give the cars a listen and you decide. It's just a shame you cannot do an audition of all at the same time, like you can with Hi Fi.

Yeah but, Wedges make that noise straight out of the box without all the altering, tweaking and modifications!

it must be the modern equivilent to attaching playing cards to your wheel spokes on your old pedal bike - to make your car sound like something it's not.

I had an S2 many moons ago which sounded great if you took the manifolds off

I run an S2 that sounds simply beautiful - and I have no idea why. At some point in its life it has had an engine rebuild and some sort of custom exhaust; but due to a lack of history, I have no idea what it was. Recently measured at 113dB, which is fairly loud, but it's the tone; sounds like a race tuned small block Chevy V8.

Put it this way - I used to have an MGB with a custom built and tuned 4.3BV from a Griffith installed. It sounded fantastic. But my humble S2 sounds better.

It's all in the exhaust/engine tune. Straight out of the box? 4.3 Griffs and Wedges are the best sounding. But as vurtually no-one runs a standard exhaust on an old TVR, you can never predict what will sound good. I would never have thought that a Ford Cologne V6 could be more fun to listen to than a highly tuned RV8...

Me too. And, in any case, I wouldn't be able to hear my CDs. Seriously though, I'm more than happy with the deep grunt noise my Trev makes!

At 160db, your eardrums pop and severe bleeding takes place!

At 170db your brain can disconnect from nerves.

At 180db your heart can stop beating!

At 190db, what????
