As discussed on another thread, I'm currently looking at getting a cheap daily. I've seen one advertised in the classifieds on here. As per the title, the car is a MY2009 but it seems like its first (UK) MOT was in 2021.

I emailed the dealership yesterday to clarify why there's an anomaly but haven't heard back from them yet. They're a big company with a good reputation so I don't have any real concerns where they're concerned.

My immediate thoughts are that it originally came from the Republic of Ireland/Isle of Man hence the reason why there's no history.

I'm not sure if there's any way I can do my own checks.

Your thoughts please.

TIA

If you have the reg number, stick it in here -> https://www.carbaba.co.uk/valuation.html Once you submit the VRN and (made up) mileage, the next page has all the vehicle data.

I've run a check, It's been given the all clear. Therefore I'm no nearer getting an answer

I'm going to chase the Dealer up a bit later

Could also have been in N. Ireland most of its early years. Tests over there have only been on the DVLA database since 2017.

Np - someone posted it on here a couple of weeks back and I similarly bookmarked it. biggrin

Was there anything in the import/scrap section of the vehicle data to indicate it came from outside UK?

Nope, nothing. All the data says it's clear. Its had two change of keepers since registration (August 2009), one in 2013, the other in 2014. Therefore if it had been imported it would have pre-dated the 'first' MOT.

Just a thought, it may also have originated from Jersey. Hence the UK registration, no MOT between 2012 & 2021 and low mileage.

What type of vehicle is it? We take out 5 year leases on off highway vehicles for use on sites. If we retain them on site they can go 10 years without an MOT.

Oh well, we will never know. I've just phoned the dealership. Apparently the car's been sold (although it's still advertised on here). He started to tell me that the car may have been on a private reg and the details sometimes don't get transferred across. I don't think this is right as I've currently got a P/P on one of my cars (which has had several P/P's before) and all the details are there to be seen

Feel free to do you own checks: VE09 BYG - Red Citroen C2. https://www.pistonheads.com/buy/listing/15067990 (Yeah, I know. I'm going to leave my PH Membership card on my way out biggrin)

I reckon you’ve dodged a bullet anyhow. I’m always suspicious of very old low mileage run of the mill cars, but that one lacking most of its MOT history makes it extremely dodgy.

Quite possibly. I would have proceeded with caution and certainly have gone in with my eyes wide open

Jersey doesn't use UK number plates, they are J followed by 6 numbers

J123456 etc.

I've seen a similar situation with an Audi A4 before. After doing some investigating, it seemed as though the car was off the road from 2 years old up until it was recommissioned and put back on the road 12 years later. Considering that Citroën you're looking at has very low miles, I wouldn't be surprised if it was in the same situation.

After being registered in the UK, the number plate would have changed, and the MoT history (or lack of it) should transfer across.

I once had an issue with DVLA a few years ago though, not transferring across the MoT data when I changed a reg no. The MoT and V5c / VED departments (different databases) blamed each other for a while but it got sorted, eventually... rolleyes
