Can anyone recommend any tomatoes in the U.K. that actually taste of tomato?

I’ve tried multiple types (admittedly mostly from supermarkets), I don’t refrigerate them etc., but they just generally taste watery.

I’m talking about tomatoes for salads, sandwiches etc., I’ve already found the trick of Mutti/San Marzano for tinned toms for cooking with.

What’s the best type, and the best place to get them from?

Tomato seaso is just begining. You have been eating the forced ones grown in greenhouses. Try and find some fresh ones from spain or france as they will be outdoor ones.
You probably have enough time this year to grow your own outside too. They will always taste better.

Try and find a decent local farm shop. The veg is night and day vs typical supermarkets.

I'm not sure how this happens but the 'loose' ones from supermarkets invariably taste of tomato-flavoured water. those which are 'on the vine' are inconsistent: sometimes they are really good yet the second packet you bought at the same time are less flavoursome, and others taste of tomato-flavoured water.

the same sort of inconsistency occurs when buying steaks!

Best advice I can give when buying fresh is to avoid anything grown in the Netherlands.

They definitely grow tastier women then vegetables. wink

On a serious note, IME, Dutch fruit/veg is intensively grown under glass often using hydroponics. It can look appealing but is tasteless. Glad you found San Marzano for cooking, but if you make ragu's try experimenting with normal plum tomatoes and adding a couple of teaspoons of redcurrant jelly to impart any natural sweetness that may be missing.
