Filling up earlier, the Golf owner opposite was really giving the fuel cutoff a workout.

Full, click

15 times or so

I've always taken the view that the extra 50ml is unlikely to save me, and if it's full enough to click off then to leave it at that. Each to their own though.

I have myself been known to lift the pipe as though I'll get a bonus 200ml. Equally bonkers I suppose.

What minor or major nuttyness have you seen whilst filling up?

Idiots who try to block the entire forecourt so that they can pick the next available pump. I just drive around them and when faced with a tirade of obscenities I simply point out the error of their ways.

Quite likely an ocd issue.

I quite often see people turning and turning a ratchet fuel cap which is probably more ignorance.

I've had some cars which seem to make the cut off unreliable, or the cut off kicks in if the nozzle is inserted all the way. Might they just be having that problem?

Of course just trying over and over without changing anything isn't likely to help

Could be the pump as well. I’ve used more than 1 with an infuriating cut out, you had to pull the handle just so or it would stop. Usually took a few attempts to discover how to hold it. That ‘oddly’ behaved person might have got a pump like this and after the 15th time decided to call it quits.

Some of them are st (asda and Morrisons I’m looking at you) and click off repeatedly as they don’t service their equipment properly.

Trying to drain the hose achieves nothing as the shut-off valve is in the nozzle part!

Yes they do.

I can normally get a litre or two extra in the foxus when the cut off first hits. Its also annoyingly picky with the angle you put the nossel in due to the capless design.

I've had a couple of cars where the first shutoff came way early (something to do with fuel sloshing around in the filler neck), and I'd get another litre or so in before the second click.

My Subaru is a bit touchy as to nozzle placement - if it's turned to the wrong angle, the pump shuts off almost as soon as fuel starts flowing.

I click and top up, usually to get to a round litre sum which may or may not get me more shell bonus points.

Pull up at the local Asda to a customer at the next pump shaking his car side to side, return to nozzle and squeeze ….. then repeat. The driver in front of him asked if everything ok. “yes, i’m trying to fill it to the brim!”
I filled my 50 odd litres and paid, he was still at it as I drove off.

People who drive to the corner of a fuel station and attach a big wire to their car, then sit back in their car for an hour or so.

What’s that about then? confused

When my diesel S60 clicks off for the first time, I know I'll still get in another 2 or 3 litres.

Must admit I don’t really know why people fill it to the brim.

It’s not like you haven’t got to go back in a couple of weeks to fill up again.

Some cars have filling issues.

My Mustang will happily click off fifty times before it's even half full. It's infuriating so I have to literally dribble fuel in.

That doesn’t sound like odd behaviour at all. Two of my cars start shutting off immediately at several pumps. I have to manoeuvre the nozzle many times to get the fuel in.

Have you tried different nozzle positions? I've found that rotating the filler nozzle to about 45 degrees from vertical can make a big difference.

Maybe it was false clicking? One of my cars does this and I have to have loads of goes at different "depths" sometimes to get it flowing. Maybe 6 or 7 clicks.
