Has anyone done this?

How does it work downloading all your posted images first?

Any regrets?

I deleted my account.

Used the dowoad option to retrieve all photos that might be on there.

No regrets.

Hadn't used it for many years, I joined up for a specific group back in 2009 I think.

Accumulated friends, shared stuff etc. then found myself checking it frequently... thought what the fk am I doing this for - looking at people's bullst - then deleted the app... about 8 years later deleted the account smile.

I might join up again for specific interest groups (again!) that could be useful, but to be honest, would rather not have to. If I did it would be strictly for that... nah sod it, no chance.

I signed up for FB only because my now sister-in-law insisted on using FB as an invite for my brothers 21st birthday.

I now use it for caving and mine exploring groups and marketplace which is a useful source of cheap stuff.

I've never post. It didn't take me long to block my sister-in-law after seeing all the cack she posts. Currently I have 1,135 friend requests which I've never accepted and when people ask, I just tell them I don't like them! biggrin

I did this when I deleted my Facebook years ago. All the data went into it's own folder.

Never looked at it, didn't bother copying it across when I changed laptop a few years later.

I'm only on Facebook because of two groups that use Facebook as their platform.
If it wasn't for those, I'd delete Facebook

They’ll still have copies of your photos on their servers I bet.

There’s no escape.

More than this they actually own the copyright to the photos in perpetuity. If you sold a picture/it went viral they have the right to any monies earned from that picture, they can also use it in any way that they choose.

No. Not really.

Facebook have a royalty-free licence to any media you post, but they don't own the copyright.

Deleted my FB a few years back. Downloaded everything to my NAS (I started the account back in 2008 so there was quite a lot of fun stuff from old phones that I'd forgotten about, so definitely worth it).

Regrets? Not one smile

The last time I looked into this - admittedly a while ago - this was the case, it may well have changed in the time since.

No that was never the case, just one of those trolling threads that got shared by all and sundry, the same as the post where people asserted their rights against Facebook rules that Facebook didn't have in the first place

By dint of selling a company to Facebook, and therefore having to piss inside their tent for several months, I'm pretty sure I know wherefrom I speak.

It was *always* the case - Doofus is correct. If you have a Facebook account then I assume you read the Terms of Service through thoroughly, more specifically section 3.3 - The permissions you give us. Here's an excerpt:

Facebook Terms of Service said:
Specifically, when you share, post or upload content that is covered by intellectual property rights on or in connection with our Products, you grant us a non-exclusive, transferable, sub-licensable, royalty-free and worldwide licence to host, use, distribute, modify, run, copy, publicly perform or display, translate and create derivative works of your content (consistent with your privacy and application settings). This means, for example, that if you share a photo on Facebook, you give us permission to store, copy and share it with others (again, consistent with your settings) such as Meta Products or service providers that support those products and services. This licence will end when your content is deleted from our systems.

Which basically boils down to in order for them to legally display your pictures, etc on their site (your profile) they have to have the licence to use them.

But of course everyone got their knickers in a twist about it.

I only post occasionally to show it's not a scam account as most of the forums have died and they're all on FB

Car / bike / off road specific groups you're missing out if you have almost any interest, if you're not on FB

So I'd keep the account but delete posts / pics if required

Precisely, the permission that so many don't understand that they grant FB when agreeing to the Ts + Cs; after all, uploading pictures of every single thing that occurs in their lives is more important than spending 20 minutes reading a relatively simple document.

I'm noticing more and more that my feed is purely suggested posts and ads.

Hardly anyone actually posts anything these days like they used to. Of my 400+ 'friends' 1 maybe 2 actual posts per day.

Instagram however is alive and kicking. Stories in particular seem to be a great place for people to throw up some disposable / fun content.

Yeh I agree, I post a lot more to Instagram these days than FB.

The purchase of Instagram by Meta (Facebook at the time) for $1bn was a genius move.. It was a huge number at the time considering it was barely a year old... but what a bargain that turned out to be.
