New job new car ot summat like that

I'm going to be doing a daily round trip commute of 100 miles. Majority on the delight that is the M4.

I'm thinking of spending around 5k as dont see the point in splashing too much on a car that is going to rack up the mileage? I could spend more but unsure if it will be a benefit.

I'd like 40+mpg (how very un PH!)
Bluetooth
Air Con

Am I over thinking it? Most cars these days should be able to handle the journey?

All cars can it is just some are more suited than others!

£5k is more than enough to get something.

I bought a Lexus GS300 SE-L for less than 3k and it was the perfect companion for the 20k miles a year I was doing.

Comfortable, 40 mpg on motorway, climate, cruise, keyless, satnav……..it goes on.

That's not a very specific list of requirements. Most cars can do that. 100 miles a day is 20K (200 work days a year) which will be around £3-4K pa in fuel costs at 40mpg.

Anyway very happy with my diesel 2017 308 blue HDI (so the new shape) which cruises well on the motorway, cruise and bluetooth etc. and gets 70mpg. If you can stretch the budget to 7K to get one of these the fuel saving will pay for itself in a year. Zero road tax as well because I like sticking it to the man.

@hammersia

Yeah I get that maybe I need to be a bit more specific.

Unless you need more than two doors I'd recommend the E350cdi coupe, they're a great car for eating up miles:

Comfy seats and a good driving position.

In all honesty pretty much any modern car in your budget will do that no problem. So you’re better off focusing on an interior you actually like the look of as you’re going to be in it so much. Then really test the seats, it’s amazing how many cars are so called great mile munchers, but your back doesn’t personally gel with the seat.

I’ve sat in cars before that I just can’t get comfortable in despite them having rave reviews.

100 mile a day commute? Do people really do that every single day? Furthest Iv ever worked is 11 miles away, current job 1 mile, 0.8 if I walk! If that was me I’d be wanted max MPG, like 1.6 golf tdi, claimed 60+ mpg.

Yep lots of people, myself included although not everyday but I'll easily do 500+ a week in my mondeo which is averaging 54mpg tank to tank.

Actual commuting to start work? Or as part of your work? 100 mile a day unpaid commuting is equivalent to around 12 weeks extra unpaid work time on a 40 hour week.

Only if you're comparing it to WFH.
If it's mostly the M4, it could be as little as an extra 25 minutes each way compared to the average commute.
Some times some people have to do this to have a good career.

Assuming no ULEZ issues, any mid sized diesel would be a fair choice.
I'd be looking for comfort and quiet at 70mph.

A lemon of any brand could bankrupt you in 20k miles so buy carefully..

3 series or 5 series diesel.

I think for 5K you might be able to get an early F10 (2010 on)

I used to do over 500 miles a week, over 400 now so slightly less.

I do it in a 2.0tdi A3 gets roughly 50mpg. A3/ golf can do it. One thing to consider is a big fuel range. I get 500+ miles to a tank but it’s still tedious.

Actual commuting to start work. Not ideal but the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow will help

I did Birmingham to Altrincham for a year. 180 miles 5 days a week and unbelievably some overtime on the weekend. I was making £14,501 back in 2002.

It wasn’t for the job, I met a girl and she was going to move up North once she got a job so it didn’t make sense to change jobs.

I had a Peugeot 306 1.9D. Not a recommendation. I was refilling every couple of days and I think it was £100 a tank.

My thoughts, think of range as well as fuel economy to reduce the number of visits to the petrol station. Comfortable seats. Modern cars have gone sporty. Avoid those BS M spec cars. Volvos used to be the king of comfort and sound. A good radio is a must. I didn’t have it back then but I’d opt for adaptive cruise with lane assist. Makes things easier. Not sure if that will be available in your budget.
