Rust on stone chip

I've got some rust it appears on a stone chip right on the front of the bonnet.

Is this sort of thing something I can challenge with VW under body/paint warranty?

I can't imagine so, the paint is there to protect the metal - and it's gone.

Nope, that's one to touch in or re-paint if it reeeeeeally bothered you.

Needs to be a material or workmanship defect to use the warranty.

Um I did think this but thanks for confirming, no idea how the rust has got in, I am regularly cleaning her and don't live on the coast.

It's a fairly big chip, has it been painted before?

Because of the stone chip. Bare metal can get surface rust in days.

The stone chip itself is just damage so not covered and a fact of life, the rust is there because the damage has not been repaired promptly. The bodyshell is galvanised, the zinc coating created by galvanising is a sacrificial coating so the fact there is rust present means the damage and exposed metal has been there a while, long enough for the zinc coating to be sacrificed and rust to start.

From my experience of paint warranty is if rust appeared in the middle of a panel with no sign of any damage it is probably covered assuming it is original paint and factory thickness.

I would comment that cleaning regularly will not stop exposed steel from rusting, how quickly the steel starts rusting is down the quality of the steel and the protective coatings i.e. galvanising, paint, etc applied to it.
