Morning all,

I've got a car with a date of first registration March 1982.
Last year when it hit 40 I was surprised to be told, when querying, that it still had to be taxed during the 40th year - bloody ripoff but hey ho it's the ripoff DVLA.
Now it's 41 years and 3 months old and the last lot of paid tax is about to run out. Cue a V11 in the post demanding another year's paid tax.
What gives? And how do I go about sorting it please?
Thanks in advance!

Hello CC. You have to tax it even if the fee is nil.

It's admin, that's all.

You need to apply for it to be tax exempt, it's not automatic. You need to fill out form V112 and visit a post office with your V5C too, from then on it's all done online.

Ta, will get one of those forms done somehow (given post office hours seem to be impossible for anyone with an actual job).

Why the fk is this not automatic given their own bloody systems knows when a car was registered? furious

AFAIK it's always been the registered keeper's responsibility to change tax class; to 'historic' is just one class change possible.

Because as you said it's nigh on impossible to get to a post office. They do it so they will collect some tax from it.

Never underestimate a beaurcracy's ability to make a simple job difficult.

If they do it to collect the tax, why did they introduce it in the first place?

You don't need the V112 form.

Yea, just take your v5 into the post office, they will change classification and send it off, you'll get an updated historic version back in a few weeks.

Interesting... By that logic can I fill out a V112 and post it to the DVLA? Saves trying to find a PO during opening hours as I assume you can't just do it online like a change of ownership?

Indeed Sixor. My thoughts too.

OP, you haven't got a VED exempt car. Your car is still registered as P/LG. It is your responsibility to apply to change the taxation class to Historic. You will still have to put 6 months VED on your car while you wait for the taxation class to take effect. You will receive a cheque for any unused months when your V5c comes back.

More bad news, you will have to declare it is MOT exempt as well if you no longer want to MOT it. Oh, and you will still have to 'tax' it each year as Historic or SORN it.

You don't have to declare anything, by being classed as historic, it no longer NEEDS to be tested, up to you whether you have it tested or not.

And you'll get a annual reminder to tax, as normal, just means it costs you nothing to do so.

In order to change the taxation class you need to declare it no longer requires an MOT.

And you are arguing my point, he still needs to tax it each year for zero or declare Sorn.

I know, I did all this with my car.

Exemption has always been that way, you have to apply for it, just like any other OPTIONAL ‘option’

Otherwise it would be mandatory and those that never asked for it would have a valid reason for a moan about ‘things’ and ‘stuff’.

Ive a historic bike, took the v5 into the post office, as it was over 40 years old it qualifies for historic status, that's what changes it's class, it's age, not the fact it no longer needs a mot, as you can test it if you choose to.

Yes, I know. They asked me to fill out the exemption from MOT form at the same time.

Lunch break?

Many post offices are also open longer hours as well.

Up to the OP, go to a post office or continue to pay VED.
