North / South Divide Meeting Point

So I live in the South, and have a lot of mates in the North but need a meet up place mid way ideally by train or road to go out for a few drinks and a good meal. A northern version of Henley or a southern version of Harrogate may work, does a midlands version of York actually exist? I suspect not. Any PH director level insight gratefully received…

Some places are easier then others to get to especially by train.

Had a Uni reunion in Nottingham (we are all well north of 50). Worked well. Furthest North traveller was Aberdeen, someone from Italy, someone from Ireland, few from Wales and the rest scattered across England. Airport also quite close. It's on the trainline.

City centre was quite busy in November. Large student population aswell so lots of bars plus some half decent hotels and restaurants.
