Having seen some success with other community members looking for background information on old objects I thought I'd follow suit with something that's puzzled me for a while now. I have in my possession an old metal chest that I'm guessing held tea or tobacco or something similar. It was somewhat handed down to me as a child through my mum and granddad but I've never known the origins of what it truly originally held or which manufacturer it may have come from.

There's no distinguishing lettering anywhere on it, just images and a lot of patina. I ended up with it as I needed somewhere to store my lego in the early 80s and this was to hand. It originally had my mum's 60s non-lego in it, which I think she said was called "better build" or something like that, which consisted mainly of white bricks but some nice green tiles that clipped together for roofing and mainly built houses. I'm not even sure where that's gone now so probably ought to hunt my mum's loft for it too. That would date the chest back to at least then, if not earlier.

Here's a couple of shots of the chest:

As mentioned, I can't see any letting, just the images. The rear appears to be the same panel as the front, the sides similar but slightly different, or might be just more worn. Any ideas of its origins?

A bit of Google-fu and it was Betta Bilda that my mum had in it previously. At least I've chased that bit of info down, just need to know about the tin.

I bet this guy in Bath can tell you, he has a little shop on the London Road selling nothing but antique tins!

It was manufactured by Airfix as an alternative to Lego (they also had their own slot car system).
