Tesla bioweapon defence mode

I thought the bioweapon defence mode was a bit of a gimmick, one of those strange Tesla laughs that people raise an eye brow at and ignore. However…

I am a massive hey-fever sufferer, it really hits me. Last couple of days I have found myself working in the boot of the car, like a lunatic, because it filters the pollen out so effectively.

Is this just a modern car thing, or is the bioweapon defence actually appreciably better at filtering air than other cars?

Presumably it can raise the cabin pressure a little, and has a HEPA filter or similar in the mix somewhere.

Shouldn't it work throughout the car and not just in the boot?

You’re sitting in the boot of your car to work? The boot of a Tesla? As the poster above has pointed out, would somewhere in the car itself not be a better option?

Watch the Tesla videos about the hvac system. The filters are HEPA rated. They are pretty big and doubled up in the Y and 3. The S has the biggest cabin air filter I have ever seen on a car. The name is a gimmick, but I don’t doubt their ability to filter day to day particulate pollution.

Sounds similar to the Clean Zone system in Volvos and Polestars.

Virtually all high end/modern cars have HEPA or equivalent which is essentially all the Tesla's really have too - so far as I understand it.

But like most American cars, they love powerful airflow and AC so the filters are pretty big.

Given that there remain panel alignment issues to the extent that some people still complain of water ingress whilst using a car wash, I'm not sure i'd 100% trust it to keep the anthrax out in a chemical attack

Most premium brands have a tech partner to look after cabin air quality I think, in JLR's case it's Panasonic Nanoe as above.

You can buy a HEPA filter for most cars too, even quite old cars.

Model S/X have 2 air filters, one in the cabin and fairly big already.



There is than a much bigger air filter in the frunk.

Probably just has active charcoal built into it along with the other bits and bobs. I suffer from hay fever and drive around in the countryside an hour a day and don't have a problem since I replaced my Focus cabin filter with a Bosch one.

Many modern cars, especially higher levels ones, come with HEPA filters, as as a fellow hay fever sufferer (though relatively mild) I can attest they work.

Is the air quality sensed automatically in Tesla's? A lot of cars now do that and activate recirc mode automatically for the duration. Useful if you're driving past a freshly muck spread field on a warm day...
