I know this has been mentioned in the NI thread but I think it's worth posting on its own:

Thanks OP. interesting read. didn't know you could top-up to qualify for age pension.

I'm a UK citizen not residing in the UK. I currently have 6 years of NI contributions. I left the UK in 2007.

If i top-up my NI for say 4 years to make a total of 10 years NI contribution (i think 10 years is the minimum NI contribution to qualify for age pension). Would that mean I'm entitle to 10/35 of the age pension when i become qualify?

Yes I think that's correct but if you call the future pension's service (if you can get through - you need to call on the dot of 8am and be prepared to wait for a long time) they will confirm and then they pass you over to HMRC who give you the necessary reference number. It could be a fabulous deal for you - back of a fag packet calculation tells me it will cost you about £3.5k but result in a pension of almost £3k a year. It may depend on where you are living though and whether you are somewhere where British citizens get index linking applied

Onny is in Australia, so UK state pension will be frozen.

According to the rules, if he has been employed or self employed in Oz then he should be able to pay the reduced Class 2 rate, 3.45 a week. I am trying to find out if this is possible at the moment, but of course it may take some time.

This is what I am aiming for, 17 years of Class 2, or about 95 pounds a week for a cost of 3,000 pounds.
