we... 4.81...so nearer 5secs ....mmm...150bhp in a light S1 with a CR box....could be possible for a factory driver, trying all day long...but yeah - typical Lotus claims - a better guide is to look in Autocar or Evo at the stats from their own testing (real world) ..but even these can be hard to achieve yourself without trashing the car...

My S2 Exige has a claimed 147 top speed. Best I managed all dat at Bruntingthorpe was 143.

The figures are optimistic IMO but I didnt buy the car for top speed so dont really care.

I've had my Sport 160 S1 at over 150 on the speedo. Not sure what the officail GPS speed would be though as I dont have a suitable device....

A lot less than that. My Speedo was reading well over 150 when the timing beams confirmed 143.

The Elises problem is aerodynamics arent that good at big speeds so you need a lot more power to compensate, like Bogies supercharged Honda.

The downforce on mine was also a problem. At 140+ you can really feel the downforce holding the car back. It feels incredibly planted but not what you want for top speed runs.

I'll bring a spanner next time so we can take off your spoiler and rear diffuser to get a few more mph !

when I had my TT230 (actually 220bhp/190lbft) and it had the WR gearbox on (std S1) it would pull a genuine (on GPS) 155mph ...as per above - you need a ton of power to get over the poor aerodynamics of the Elise.

With the CR (S2) gearbox on it would pull 145mph....but it would get there quicker - its a trade off between gearing/power etc.

The speedo (well mine anyway) seems to be within 1mph of accuracy at 30mph and 100mph, but then gets progressively more optimistic after that - reads 150 when its really 140mph etc.

the speedo on the elise is actually digital - so provided the correct wheels and tyres are fitted it should remain accurate at all speeds

however - from what you guy are saying, its not accurate at all !!

either lotus screwed up the calibration of the speedo - or there are quite a few faulty speedo's out there.

Bogie - what rpm did you get 155mph ? - did the speedo read 155 too ? was it std rolling circumference tyres ?

I use a roadangel and have consistently found the speed tallies very well with the speedometer at a constant speed. The gps obviously has a lag time for speed. However at 70mph, there is little or no discrepancy. As bogie said, it does get less accurate at higher speeds. Remember also that there is a degree of tyre deformation at progressively higher speeds - whether this influences things I do not know.

Regarding top speed - I really don't know - saw ~ 120 at Silverstone but did not get the impression a standard 111s would go that much quicker - 10-15mph max. The acceleration really tails off above 110. References to people for example losin the soft top at 150 mph are usually the honda powered boys, 111r's or highly tuned k-series, but the latter are at the top end of the rev range for an S2. For me those would involve either an aeroplane or a very tall cliff, neither of which appeals!

Down the back straight at Bedford my standard S2 111S roof off;

> Zoomed up to around 105
> Eased up another 10
> Loafed and Wheezed on a bit more

before bottling it on the brakes for the kink. Topping out at 110 indicated for enough time to allow the road angel to catch up and it also read 110 plus/minus 1 or 2 so spot on.

"Bogie - what rpm did you get 155mph ? - did the speedo read 155 too ? was it std rolling circumference tyres ? "

cant remember now - its a while ago, the speedo only goes to 150mph and it had been well off that, yes std tyres.

Now with SC Honda lump, I was hitting 145-150mph down the straight at Bedford...may have been a little more to come, but I wasnt confident in my brakes as the pedal had gone to floor after 2 laps ! ...I feel another brake upgrade coming on
