Earlier this year I sold my second car, leaving me with just one car for the time being.

I’ve had separate policies on each car, and have built up 9 years & 10 years NCD on each policy respectively.

I know that NCD remains valid for 2 years, but I don’t know whether I will be getting a second car that quickly.

That being the case, I would like to insure my current car by alternating between the two sets to NCD, so that each NCD is unused for only a year at a time, and therefore keeping both sets of NCD in date.

The question is how will future insurance companies know which NCD is in use, and which is dormant?

Is it as simple as keeping the renewal paperwork every year that shows the NCD, so that there is a clear paper trail that can be shown to future insurers?

How have others dealt with a similar scenario?

Thanks.

Of course - I have in the past on different cars.

Now I have a multi car policy so just the one.

I don’t know just how much difference many years of NCD make these days, OP, so to be honest I wouldn’t worry too much.

I wouldn’t bother, I had maximum no claims on a second vehicle that I let go when I had a company vehicle for a few years. Insured a second vehicle again recently with zero NCD, much the same quotes as when I put in that I had maximum NCD.

Manage it yourself and keep clear detailed record.

The whole NCD thing is BS really and it's proven by insurers not knowing what you have or have not got. There are ways to fiddle the system if you were so inclined.

Had 3 sets of NCD but have dropped to 2 now as have a single car. Both are maxed so just alternate each year to ensure validity.
You don't need to run a full year to maintain. You can switch at any point though you'll be likely to pay an admin fee. make sure to get an updated certificate when you switch to the other NCD line.

Thanks for the replies so far.

It seems that keeping all paperwork, and a good paper trail with each insurance company is the key, in case they ever want to query the provenance of either set of NCD.

Your spare NCD will expire after about 2 years.

I found out about this after 3 years of company car use...

When i went from insuring 2 cars on a multicar policy to insuring both seperatley, one car ended up with no no claims, it was cheaper to insure on its own policy without no claims bonus than with full no claims on the multicar policy. And the few years since then as it built up no claims the price has not changed a lot. Mind I am old and have a long claim free history.

So I would check if having full no claims or none actually makes a difference.

Every 1.5 years, take another policy out on the car for 1 day. Cancel it, pay the cancellation charge (minimal)

They'll give you a fresh proof of NCD with a new date

Not in my experience. The NCB is only issued on completion of a policy so will revert back to the previous insurance. you might be able to blag it using the policy schedule though.

Want to get 10 or 20 years NCD for free?

Just start a policy with any insurer and tell them you have however much NCD you like.

Do not crash in that year.

At the end of the year, end your policy and get proof of NCD in writing from the insurer.

Hey presto. Your decades long history of safe driving without making any claims now magically exists.

I'm not recommending this course of action, but it gives you an insight into how the "system" works.

Caveat: Some insurers will request proof when you start your policy, but the vast majority do not, and won't, unless you actually try to claim.

I don't think I've ever had an insurer fail to ask for proof of NCD. YMMV.

Is there not a central database that insurers use these days? (Or was I just being spoofed when I did my renewal hehe)

There's the MiD but I dunno if that constitutes NCD proof or not. Certainly wouldn't work in all circumstances.

My current insurer is eSure; they have a portal you are supposed to upload your previous NCD proof into -- but their website didn't/doesn't work properly for that. I ended up emailing their customer services mine.

I wasn't referring to MID.

When I did a recent renewal I got something similar to "We'll let you know if we need you to upload proof of NCD depending on our checks", or words to that effect.

Gotcha.

I wonder if the groups of branded insurers share this stuff, or perhaps the comparison websites, if you've bought through them.

Like, Admiral / Elephant / Diamond / Bell are all the same. They used to own confused.com too, but divested it.

Esure used to own gocompare.com, but have divested it. Same company is sheila's wheels.

Budget owned comparethemarket.com and they branded insurance for loads of others, such as Zenith, the RAC, M&S, HSBC, Santander, Lloyds, Halifax, but then got out of the actual insurance underwriting market meaning the company is effectively comparethemarket plus the customer services for its brands.

There are loads of other groups -- if you move from Budget to Zenith, do they share your info?

You're mistaken. Any period of using NCD will create an updated certificate. You won't get the extra year NCD unless you complete a full year but you will get an updated validity date.

I have noticed the last 3 or 4 years when I have input my NCB when buying the policy that they tell me I don't need to supply any proof and the NCB the following year come renewal is updated correctly.

I'm not, because it happened to me. My insurer supplied the date of the previous policy expiry.

I have maximum NCD on my daily and used to have maximum on my second car which i gave up a little while ago.
My second NCD had run out but i recently got a quote of £312 for a new Cooper hatch jcw starting again with no NCD.

I doubt it would of been much cheaper if i did have NCD....

As long as i had use of another car was the important thing..
