I was stopped by a policewoman in a van at a set of traffic lights. I was doing maybe 60mph in the 40 just before. I managed to talk her out of giving me a ticket. She radioed the cars registration then told me if I get stopped again I'll go to court since the cars reg will be in an ABPI database.

Whats that all about? So if I get stopped for 40 in a 30 I'll go to court? I wonder how long it stays in this database? (I was in North Yorkshire)

The first question she asked me was have you been stopped before?

I'm wondering if I'm ever stopped again and say no, the officer will find out I lied and have been and come down on me hard. If I say yes it will incriminate myself meaning I'm sure to get a ticket.

Did you sign anything ? Were you given a Fixed Penalty ? Were you cautioned or given a verbal NIP ? Were you given a producer ?

If the answers to all those questions are NO, then its a bluff and extremely unlikely that there will be any record of the incident.

Also, I thought that ABPI was something to do with pharmarceuticals, not the police....

I may have got the abbreviation wrong.

I didn't sign anything.
No fixed penalty, caution or producer or verbal NIP

She did write the details in a pad, which could have been a book of tickets and she changed her mind or maybe it was her notebook.

My step son was stopped by a Dorset police Officer in a 50mph limit. The Policeman asked him if he knew what the speed limit was to which he replied yes 50mph. The Policeman then said to him 'I've clocked you at 49mph watch your speed in future'.

She has just warned you ...... and probably got a message created on their forces computer system to say when, where and for what you were verbally warned.

Thats what we can do in London so another officer stopping you would be told you have previously been warned and be less likely to let you off with another warning. It does drop off our system after a set period but as I don't work in a control room I don't know exactly how long.

I don't know what database she mean't - sounded like the Association of British Insurers or the like ...... which makes no sense in relation to speed - maybe she was just checking with the insurance databse to make sure you were insured and you have got the wrong end of the stick ?

Anyway, don't worry warning or not - it's not 3 points !

Talk about knee-jerk response from plod;

'Plodette' stepped into car park entrance at waitrose the othe other week, to 'speak to me'
saying I was speeding (from standstill i might add)
and that there "are children about"

This from the woman parked half on/off the kerb on a blind bend, impeding pedestrians, no lights/sirens and and only got out of stationary patrol car, to speak to me.

Given that she can't prosecute based on her lone opinion that you were speeding, I'd have given her both barrels at that point (unless perhaps you were speeding?).

Shoulder tag number and a note to the CC.

I was warned off doing that by a relative in another force - he asked if I *really* wanted to be stopped *every* time I went out?

She could prosecute if she had formed the opinion of speed and had corroborative evidence via her speedo while following.

Does sound a bit like a bluff although it is feasible that she could put a marker on a local intel database, or even a marker on national PNC, to alert others to your heinous criminal behaviour .

Seems unlikely though.

But woz, if you were doing perhaps 60 in a 40 then I'd suggest that repetition is likely to acquire you a ticket even without the prior warning.

Whether you agree or disagree with inappropriate limits it might just be wise for the retention of your own licence to drive at a speed slightly closer to the limits. You may be less likely to get noticed.

But isnt this what we all preferred from BiB, ie a human using their initiative & common sence, rather than just a scamera ?

For my 2p worth, shes done him a favour by not giving him a £60 fine & endorsing his licence with 3 points.

As for writing to the Chief Constable.......all that will happen is that the WPC in question will be told to apply the law far more stringently in future & hand out even more tickets. Do we really want that ?

The post highlights a problem that a lot of you should note.

If you have any dealing with BiB on similar lines then chill and make a mental note of what he says. If there is anything you do not understand at the end then politely ask so that you are up to speed when you leave. Saves a hell of a lot of arguement and ill feeling later.

I that incident quoted I would have wanted to confirm that no prosecution action was being taken. Whilst the speeds involved came within the gambit for the issue of a Fixed Penalty Ticket she is not under any obligation to issue one and can report or summons from details in her NoteBook and thereby not issue any paperwork at the roadside.

Not familar with initials and contact in N Yorks cannot advise.

......you sure it wasn't a Section 59 warning?

What happened was I turned right after stopping at traffic lights at a T junction. She was stopped on the main road at the lights facing towards my direction of travel. When she saw me go off into the distance she jumped her red light and chased me without blues. After about 20 seconds I stopped at the next set of lights and 8 seconds or so later she reached me. So she had to drive faster then 40mph to catch me but I had a head start. She said I was doing 60-65mph but I don't know how accurate she could say that.

Is a section 59 warning where the police can impound a car? She never mentioned that.

She said that I will be on a database and if I speed again I'll go to court and there will be no second chance.

I wonder how long it will stay in the database for in North Yorks.

Sounds good to me.

Only supposition:

Sounds very much she wanted a look at you/your van for another reason and used the speed quotation as an excuse. You obviously didn't fit what she had in mind and let you go.
