I couldn’t work out where to put this question, so figured this might be the best place.

I’m looking at getting a towbar fitted, mainly to facilitate the purchase of a small boat.

So what’s the difference between a flanged and non-flanged towbar? Do they each fit specific types of trailers?

Many thanks!

All balls are standard size, so will fit any hitch, unless it’s ancient. The flanged balls will also accommodate
a greater selection of accessories eg bike carriers. Swan necks can be removable or fixed.

Swan necks tend to be removable so "look nicer"

I prefer flanged so I can tow a multitude of trailers using a height adjustable plate

If you aren't bothered about either just buy the cheapest

It’s also worth considering that flanged Towbars generally allow a higher nose weight on the trailer than a swan neck or detachable.

Within reason more noseweight = more stable towing
