BMW confirms all-new M5 Touring for 2024
Thought an M3 wagon was cool? You ain't seen nothing yet...

For the first time in the history of BMW’s M Division, 2024 will see both an M3 and an M5 Touring in the product lineup. (A load more SUVs doesn’t seem so bad now, right?) Just confirmed as part of the seventh generation M5 range is a wagon variant, the first such car since the much loved E61 variant with its V10 engine. The new car will be only the third estate ever in almost 40 years of the M5, the first being the straight-six E34 of the early 1990s.
‘The perfect symbiosis of M-typical performance, uncompromising long-distance comfort and impressive spaciousness will experience a renaissance in 2024 with the new BMW M5 Touring’, says the press release. Which sounds like a pretty incredible fast estate to us, especially if it can emulate what’s been achieved with the M3. That experience with additional space and luxury ought to be an incredible family bus.

Don’t forget the additional power, too, the next M5 coming with a hybridised V8 previewed in the Label Red XM. The SUV produces 748hp, and there’s surely no way that a badge as iconic as the M5 will be offered with any less power than the XM. Or even if it does, to protect the big old beast as the M flagship, 700hp or so is a healthy gain over today’s 625hp. With the advantages of electrification for filling in turbo lag. And what’s a bit more weight on two tonnes…
BMW is being coy on details for now, rightly confident that the mere confirmation of the first M5 Touring in more than 15 years is newsworthy enough. It says that testing will commence for the new car on public roads imminently, with the Nordschleife and other circuits to follow for ‘ensuring the ideal balance of sporting performance on the racetrack and superior ride comfort in everyday driving and over long distances.’ Additionally, BMW is promising ‘fascinating innovations for an even more intense performance experience’. Which will inevitably be taken with a healthy pinch of salt, though M does feel to be on something of a role for the moment. It’d be a brave person who bets against an M5 Touring redefining uberwagon expectations, put it that way. We’ll know for certain come 2024.

According to my Mrs my dick is plenty big enough so I really don't need 700bhp in an estate car to compensate and that's the trouble with all these new cars. Increasing BHP to win the brag then all the weighty tech stuff needed to keep it on the road. Which then removes the skill and consequential enjoyment from driving a high powered car in the first place. Enough oomph for a clean overtake and after that it's a bit pointless these days, as on no occasion will you ever be able to exploit this cars full potential on a public road. There's then a very, very long list of better cars for significantly less money to track
Pleased they're making it though.
I love a fast wagon as much as the next person but I think the power figures and price of these is way OTT for the UK market.
...they've already put a massive grille on it haven't they? That's why there are no shots of the front end.
