Has anyone out there gone a bit "Carlos fandango" and had their crash helemt painted?
Who did you use?
Was it a good job?
Any pics and prices to help me decide whether its worth it would be great.

Mine cost about £300 incl. Based on my design. Quality job. Used Gremlin Design. They have a web-site.

Spoke to a few people at Autosport a year or so ago & £250/£300 seemed to be about the going rate for a decent job.

Hiya,

I have had two bike helmets done, as I used to race bikes.
One was done by Richard Carman at "Ultimate Airbrush" and the other was done by Andy Beazley of "Splat Design",at the time he was just starting to work full time for one of the major race teams, and so not sure if he does private commissions anymore?? Both were around £400 a piece, but looked the business. The first one was wiped out in a big off at Oulton park, but I have the "Splat" one which still looks superb.
Not sure about car helmets, but bike helemts you need to make sure the paints/materials they are using do not weaken the helmet in any way, so only go to a reputable company. Also you must not remove the BS mark stickers from it otherwise you may have problems if you need to get through scrutineering!!

They do alot of helmets for some big names (and me)
Very reasonable and the designs have always been spot on. And a quick turn around. Totally recommended !

Cheaper alternative is to buy a bike name replica. I realise this probably isn't quite what you want (ie individual) but Arai's are only about £50 extra.

This is my next one....

and this is Phatgixxer's classic...

Okay a bit of a Schwantz-fest but how about......

I realise that is a bit small so if you want a massive version, try here www.araihelmet-europe.com/Arai%20site/wallpapers/10_2005_HAYDEN_0312.jpg

Hope this helps...

Whoops, forgot to say that the only downside is the difference between 'car' and 'bike' helmets..

Arai said:
Are there differences between helmets for motorcycle and car race use?

Yes!
To start with: car race helmets are equipped with fire resistance Nomex material. The shield system is
stronger (but lacks the streamlined 'holders' of the motorcycle models) and the material of the shield
thicker due to regulations. The visor opening is (much) smaller for some models, while the shape of the
outer shell differs.

Car race helmets are approved with the worldwide SNELL approval, due the fact that these helmets
are intended for race us only. Mototcycle helmets are developed also for normal street use, but they are
in fact the same helmets as used by the racers in the various racing disciplines (road racing, motorcross etc).

Some governments demand a national approval for theur country, for instance the UK the BSI 6658 Type A,
while other European countries demand the ECE 22-04 approval while in Japan the JIS approval is required.

However for trackdays, bike helmets are fine

It's worth pointing out that it's quite hard to get a car helmet. Most normal bike shops (unsurprisingly) don't sell the Type A approved helmets you need for car racing. However I'm using a gold stickered bike helmet for trackdays which most other people tend to do unless they're very serious and/or loaded.

I went for a pre-painted jon in the end. Crescent didn't have the Schwantz in one big enough! I managed to get JR to sign it too.....

PS, yep, I have retaxed the bike!

When you up-specing to the K5 - or K6 as it will be! Its a sure way to keep the old man Dawe behind as he can't be made to fit one.

And before the banter starts Phatsuperdream the K3 has been sold!!!!!!!!!

Phil,

I'm keeping the K3. I'm slightly taller and lighter that phatnpinkmobile so I don't fit on a K6 either. Angus has 165 at the rear wheel where mine 'only' has 160 so I have far more power to weight.....hehehehehe!

I have upgraded the car from the 1.9 Pug to a new XR3i, I mean Focus ST (arrives in Mar as it will be a Feb build - the first spec alterable ones). I was soooo close to buying a clio trophy but the ST pipped it. I'm not going to track it (much) but trips to the Dorint (with cars and bikes on the tiles in the shower etc) should feature on a regular basis. Have I made the right choice? The Contis look like they will suffer even on the 'ring so R888 as a replacement?

To keep this 'sort of' on topic, the RX7 is painted by SMAC designs? The design isn't on Arai Europe's website either so a special for Crescent?

PS How is your dirtbike riding coming on? I have been offered a chance to go with Taylor Suzuki around the ridgeway (new laws notwithstanding) in the near future on a DR400, should be good!
