PH-ers

Hoping you can help

Friend is in process of re-importing a LHD Fiat 500C 2014 55,000 km back into the UK
Vehicle was ordered and registered in UK and then immediately exported duty/tax free to Switzerland
HRMC have advised she’d now be liable for 10% duty and 20% VAT on current market value

Cant find any data/sold prices of any LHD Fiat 500’s in the UK - how can I make the case that value would be 25% lower than equivalent RHD model ?

TIA - Tim

I would start with a couple of written valuations from dealers. They are correct that duty and VAT will be payable. You will also need a Certificate of Conformity to register it in the UK.

It will be a slow and costly process and I wouldn’t recommend bothering unless the car has significant sentimental value.

Thanks for the msg - we have all the Conformity certificates, new RHD headlights were 100 wuid and a dual mph/kmh dial 20 quid

So hoping whilst painful it shouldnt be costly !?

I'd say only 25% lower is being generous. It's not a particularly rare or special car so why would anyone want the hassle of LHD unless it was extremely cheap?

Waste of time.

Why wouldn't you just sell it and buy a RHD one?

Because they know the car and car prices are bonkers? I've actually found selling LHD in this country has attracted a premium in some cases!!

Isn't there an exemption on VAT and duty once the car reaches 10 years old? Might be a plan to wait until next year.

Usually because they go back to the continent, no? Sell in CH for maximum value -> buy a cheap UK one.
