Eurotunnel Le Shuttle Width

Hi all,

Does anybody know the width of the carriages for cars on the Le Shuttle? I know the normal carriages have metal guide rails so I’m trying to determine if my car would fit in these carriages. I cannot find anything on the office website.
The website doesn’t give any dimensions and doesn’t recognise my car. I am trying to get the actual dimensions. Tried searching online but literally can’t find any answers. I’m not looking for suggestions of what carriage to go for, I need physical dimensions please if anybody can help.

The trains can take a full size coach, how big is your car?

When you are booking and put in your registration they will automatically allocate you to the wide vehicle part of the train if your car is over a certain width and needs extra space. They started this about 2 years ago, the system works well and has always allocated me a wider carriage.

Alternatively, if the only reason your car is wider/taller is due to modifications and the system doesn't automatically figure it out, just put "with roof rack" when selecting vehicle type and it'll allocate you to the "coach" train free of charge.

I was once in a eurotunnel train with a full size coach, and a helicopter on a trailer. If your car is wider than these things, you may not fit.

This would have fit in the normal carriage but suspect it wouldn’t make the ramp.

Maybe tell us what car it is.

As has been pointed out they fit coaches on easily and just state with roof rack to guarantee you're in that bit.

Someone told me the width of the track is standard 2m or 6'6". No idea if that's true, but it seemed about right.

Those don't include the standard car carriages, which is what the OP is asking about.

Take a look at this Alamy photo for the standard car carriages:

What this photo shows is that the trickiest bit is going around the toilets - the part in the foreground of the photo. If your car is wide it can be tricky to avoid the sharp corners on the left hand side this photo.

I have taken a 2008 Cayenne on these carriages. From memory there are probably about 2 inches either side between tyres and guide rails. The bits around the toilets are extremely close, between bashing the toilet wall with the exterior mirror on one side, and gouging your sidewalls on the corners on the other side.

With your exterior mirrors pointing down to the ground, you can monitor your positioning while driving through the carriage.

No they're not. The 2.5m width is for the 'high vehicle' carriages.

They are all car carriages, which one you get put in depends on your car. They aren't going to put a vehicle in a carriage it doesn't fit in. It is checked when you book or, if necessary, a quick phone call is made.
