Hello,

I'm looking at getting my wife a new car for baby transport duties.

We got a Nissan Juke (MK1) and frankly it's a stupid car. I've heard it called a 'reverse tardis' and that is very apt, amazing how little boot space there is. It also guzzles fuel like mad for its size, so it has to go.

We're looking at moving up to something bigger but still not huge and it looks like the two contenders are a Nissan Quaishqai or Kia Sportage.

Budget is around £10k so looking at 2011 model cars.

Also, any other contenders?

Key criteria:

- Automatic
- Not too slow
- Economical (40+ combined)
- Big boot
- Parking sensors + rear cam at least
- Nice interior

Your thoughts much appreciated

The Gashqai isn't great space wise either, I'd go Sportage personally.

The petrol Qashqai of that age is dismal.

We ran one for 3 years. Dont do it to youself.

if you think the consumption on your sardine can is bad, the petrol automatic Qashqai drinks more fuel than almost any other vehicle ever made.

It would not be an upgrade.

If you want a small SUV thing, look at a Suzuki Vitara in petrol form. Just make sure you don't get whichever engine it is that needs an oil change every 9 months, for obvious reasons.

Of those two, I'd lean towards a Sportage. It's a bit bigger. Although you'd want to check the boot space — friends of mine have one for their little 'un, and find the boot decent, but theirs is the following model (the fourth generation 2015 - 2021 one) and I think the boot on the third generation is a touch smaller.

One of my brothers had a Qashqai+2 for a while way back when. It was fine white goods transport for their family, but yes it did drink a bit (oil as well as petrol). They lucked out with a good Nissan dealer too but there are quite a lot of CBA ones. They went for a +2 because the standard Qashqai wasn't quite spacious enough in the back and boot.

Alternatives: yes, Suzuki Vitara could be a good shout although looking on A/T just now there isn't a single automatic one for sale up to 10k in the entire UK (if you exclude cats S, C, D and N).

Other option would be an estate (standard PH response to anyone wanting an SUV, haha) or some kind of MPV-esque thing. Ford C-Max is a very versatile and practical thing for the footprint, ditto Mazda 5 and Toyota Verso. Skoda Yeti or Roomster if you fancy something a bit different. Estates — Seat Leon wagon is decent, as is the Kia Ceed. Peugeot 308 has a decent boot. Skoda Octavia worth a look too.

The petrol engine in mine was fairly gutless and the Fuel consumption wasnt the best. I think it was a 1.6. I might be wrong.

The car was a decent spec, but everything felt cheap and budget .

It was very much a white goods vehicle. My wife who isnt into cars was even glad to see it go, even although it had been reliable and hadnt caused us any issues. It was just really drab and dull motoring.

You'll get a nice Hyundai Santa Fe Premium for your budget & that's a class up from the two you're considering, as well as meeting all of your criteria:

A jag XF sportbrake would meet your criteria bar being a SUV.
I have a 2.2 diesel and its excellent. 2013 plate.

We had a Merc Bclass in the same situation. Should get a 2015+ car with all the bits you want. Boot capacity more than nearly all other hatchbacks.

We had a 2014 Qashqai with the 1.6 167 bhp petrol engine which wasn't too bad really, we traded it in for a 2017 Xtrail with the Renault 1.6 dci
diesel engine and this was hideous.
It lunched its engine at 37000 miles costing us £4000 to rectify.
Traded in a few days later.

I’d start looking at Japanese cars at that age. Honda CRV or Toyota RAV 4.

Would be scared to death of 12 year old Nissan which is a Renault and I have heard old Kia’s aren’t great either.
