It's been a science fiction idea for decades (though not as cool as a space sunshade), they were talking about it in the 60's. The appeal of course is it means "we" can continue to profit from burning fossil fuels and atmospheric alteration can be subcontracted to corporations who we pay via taxation. In reality I think they get a pittance to work on this stuff. Even less than fusion research. Probably makes good training for meteorologists and atmospheric modellers.

Downside is that climate modelling is hard, so there will be a vagueness to any mitigation and if we continue to increase GHG emissions we'll be tied to doing it forever or else risk very sudden changes when we stop.

If any scientist worthy of the name is considering this, it's pretty much an admission that we're doomed.
