What a weekend!!!
Discussion
Ok, so picked her up (GSXR600) on Saturday...Still can't believe that with 3 days riding experiance the law lets me out on anything I like!
The bike is awesome! How fast...jesus! I absolutely love it. Did around 200 miles at the weekend, just riding round peoples houses to show them!
Had an issue with cornering over about 50 though....Bl**dy thing wouldn't turn..Imagine my trousers when I tried to address a long sweeping right hander at about 70, and the thing was just hugging the kerb. Thought I was off. Then I was told that if I steered INTO the kerb(sounded like madness at the time) I would have leaned the other way......BINGO..Got it now, and loving it.
Trouble is, I'm now looking at any excuse to leave work early *every day) just to make the most of the good weather!
However, after my near "off" I consider myself to be much more reserved and experianced!!!
Anyone have any good rides at the w/e?

Glad you're enjoying your bike. But take it easy, 3 days of riding does not a Rossi make. Crashing HURTS and will make a mess of the bike and, more importantly, you.
So have fun, but be safe. We don't need another 'statistic'
Sorry if this sounds like an old fart talking, but I do about 20k miles a year on an R1, so trust me, I know what I'm talking about

tried pushing the bars the wrong way yet? on a long bend gently push the inside bar away from the direction of the turn, gently mind! as if turning into a tail slide to a lesser scale. It will drop on its side like a shot and stay there until asked to do otherwise. Go and try it.
you mean counter steering , you will find yourself doing it anyway after a while without realising ! just go steady for a while mate , get used to the bike , all bikes can be a handfull at times as i found out at the weekend !
Thanks all....Yeah, just starting with the steering...Sounded like absolute lunacy at first, but it's obviously the way forward.
Yeah, I'm taking it pretty easy. At 33 I'll leave the racing around to the kids out there!!
Getting new tyres on Thursday.....Dunlop 207's for £175 all in...A good deal?

Mate, Do I detect bad news?
Chili - Im shocked that your instructor didnt teach you about counter steering! Mine taught me it on my first day on a 500cc.
Denny - before I sorted my suspension out (it was set as solid as it would go) I used to get tank slappers all the time, the smallest of bumps under harsh acceleration used to start the bars waggling. I just kind of got used to it! Thankfully now that ive softened the rear shock up I get them far less often, though they do still happen sometimes.
You going to Poole Quay tonight mate?

Excuse the ignorance, but what's a tank slapper??!!
I had a "tank" experiance...Down the A414, a few bumps in the road.... like a small ramp, anyway when I came back to rest on the bike, I smacked my pills on the tank....Is this similar??!!
Mad Dave....Na, no training on the steering....Would have been nice though!

Tank slappers are when the bars flap about almost uncontrollably for apparently no reason. It usually starts when the front wheel starts to skim a bit (hard on the gas) or landing wheelies crossed up
The tyre basically grips on alternate sides of the carcass and bounces back and forth (hard to explain so I'll leave it to someone more scientific). Makes the bars oscillate, sometimes dramatically - like spit you off dramatically.
On another note. £175 for the 207s sounds good. Nice soft grippy tyre, but you'll be through them pretty quick.
Just had a pair (like an hour ago!) of Bridgestone BT014s fitted to the R1. Riding on new tyres always feels so alien! Just shows how knacked the old ones were

Damn right. I run D208s (replacement for the 207s) and I get through a rear in 2k miles and the front is almost half worn with only 1200 miles on it!!
Dennis - have replied to your mail and sent you a text msg mate.

Sounds fun!
You definately need to look up 'counter-steering' - once you have it sussed (and it is very easy!) that GSXR will corner like it's on rails

PS This thread needs some pictures!

Steve,
Haven't seen you on here for a bit. When are you coming on a track day![]()
Chilli,
Good on yerbut please don't try to run before you can walk, I know we all sound like your mum, but most of us have come off at some point, and in my case on things MUCH slower than yours
Hello matey,
My next track day on a bike will have to be 2006. Need to lose the lard before I get measured up for my BKS suit.
See you at BTaP,
Steve.
