Stage payments by credit card

I have the facility to accept payment by credit card, though I rarely use it. In my line of work it is normal for the customer to pay by stages. It's my understanding that CC companies say in effect, one transaction, one payment. Certainly that's what my CC company says. And yet I hear it everywhere that people pay deposits etc by credit card
Anyone know about this stuff?

I regulary take a deposit first, then full payment later on credit card........never had any problem.
