Completely subjective but it seems that every time I go out I encounter someone doing something bizarre. Forcing through gaps, pulling out at junctions, the most bizarre of overtakes, complete inability to negotiate pinch points or roundabouts .. towns, countryside, motorways, the most mentalness I’ve seen in 20+ years of driving. Has the cost of living crisis sent everyone crazy?

Anyone else noticed this? If not maybe it’s just my driving biggrin

Nope, definitely a thing.

I was driving down the road, minding my own business and a guy comes out of a junction, so I slow down. He then proceeds to drive towards me as he wanted to park up on my nearside tt.

The selfish throbber couldn't even wait for me to pass, before pulling out, but had to cut me off to park 2 seconds quicker.

I've definitely noticed an increase of selfish tossers recently.

I may have detected an increase in angry white-van type drivers but I don’t do enough driving on a daily basis to say for sure.

Totally agree on the standard and type of driving. People just don’t give a fk about there fellow (wo)man anymore. You don’t really need to narrow it down just to road manners, its life in general.

I would say it’s down to lockdown / social media more than COL.

Absolutely, the standard of driving and general manners on UK road have reached what feels like an all time low, on the weekends in particular. Lots of very angry, selfish people on the road.

The drive back around the M25 on Sunday from the PH Sunday Service was a miserable experience!

In my area where the roads in the past were empty there now seems to be cars parked on the road. Now if I remember correctly if your part of the road is clear and a car has to pass the parked cars you have the priority over the oncoming car, If the parked cars are on my side I always give way to the oncoming cars.
This doesn't seem to apply these days as I seem to get abused when I consider I have priority.

Well these days I mostly drive during normal working hour and the standard of driving is generally good. Bar the odd pensioner racing around at 20mph. But there really is a difference if you pop out on a weekend a during the school run. No manners taking risks and generally very pushy driving. Sit in rush hour jams and its amazing any gets anywhere as everyone appears to be obsessively staring at the passenger seat.

It’s at a point now that I rarely enjoy driving in the U.K.

When I spend time at my Spanish home I actually enjoy going for a drive again, as I did 25 years ago in the U.K.

They are mental lately. People have lost depth perception and are either going for gaps that aren't there or nervously waiting then the gap is the size of a barn door. Also noticing more poor positioning at junctions and how so many now can't stop at the white line and are several feet away from it.

Yeah it's weird, the test is supposed to be the most difficult/comprehensive it's ever been yet the standard does appear to have plummeted.

I used to have to drive in and out of London each day and you'd only see a few bad examples on each trip. Now it's every set of lights, every group of cyclists, every lane merge, no one indicating on roundabouts, some woman who can't get her Qashqai through a gap a bus just went through, some taxi stopped in the middle of a slip road or some idiot slaloming down the road between lanes getting nowhere quicker.

Totally agree, I had my first run in with a nutter in years on Saturday. A van who was sat 10 yards back from a junction, looking like he was waiting to pull out but just sat there doing nothing. He was in the middle of the lane, brake lights on, no indicators. I waited and waited, as traffic grew behind me but he wouldn't pull out?? I pipped my horn to wake him, still nothing, cars behind me started pipping, still nothing! So I was forced to go on the wrong side of the road, at a junction to try and pull around him without someone pulling into the junction head first into me. As I edged around and got level, I looked across and the van driver was chatting on his phone!!! I couldn't believe it and actually said, "WTF" out loud. I got round him though and went, other cars behind blared horns at him as well, the van seemingly didn't care though.

Few minutes later I see in my rear view mirror the van wildly overtaking cars, until he gets to me and starts flashing his lights and gesturing for me to move over, so I move to let the nutter past but he pulls in behind me. He then winds his window down and hangs out his window shouting at me, "I was on the phone you f-ing idiot"?? "On your phone at junction and you think I'm the idiot?" and I drive off, as I drove off he gets out his van and starts running after me, which did make me laugh.

Absolute nut case, blocking a junction to make a call, then angry at people who point out his place to make a call is idiotic.

Been to Birmingham and Manchester to collect The Vikingettes from University.

Brumingham: Uber/Taxis are universally st. Stopping on zigzags to drop off pick up passengers without warning, random lane changes say from Lane 4 to Lane 1 to make an exit.

Manchester: everyone thinks they are a gangster in their #premium cars giving you death stares when you have the audacity to look at them for cutting your up. When you look over the women are orange with slugs for eyebrows or the men will have little man bag straps.

seems like a fairly typical pistonheads rant...

personally, no, cant say i've noticed anything different in the last few years, to be honest. only thing i've noticed is a lot more traffic lights springing up as more and more houses get built round my way.

but no, how people drive through town and on the motorways seems about the same as its always been. perhaps im in a different part of the country to everyone else...

We get these threads every couple of months with someone asking "has it all suddenly gone to pot?". It's more likely that you've just come across a string of nutters in relatively rapid succession over the course of a few days or weeks than there has been any sudden or recent change.

Standards were poor ten years ago as well, you just don't remember. Bigger, harder to place, more anaesthetised cars with loads of torque from 1400rpm don't help either, but all this is gradual.

Hot weather and cost of living squeeze stresses can filter through to people, you don't need much of an average rise to see it out on the roads?

Think he's referring to the state of roads with multiple potholes.

Poster changes road position to avoid hitting them and wonders how that looks to other drivers potentially in leased SUVs and thus not caring two hoots about vehicle damage.
