Used car from dealership service record missing
Discussion
Where do I stand?
I Bought a used car off a main dealer back in September with FSH (2018 Ford Focus ST Line-x). The other day I decided to check up when the service is due etc as I know the MOT is in July.
Turns out there is no service book in the car. Rang them and they have said it was serviced prior to me receiving the car. I’ve asked about the previous records and they are saying that the book must have been lost or they never received one.
Probably should’ve checked if there was one when I got the car but I never thought I would have to! I’m looking at selling the car but now this looks problematic as I can’t provide service history records.
Can anyone offer advice on where I stand with this? The dealership have said they are going to try and track down previous owner but I’ve not really got any hope on this.
I’m tempted to try and make them buy the car back off me!

Your options are:
1. Good luck with the dealership finding it. They won't. They will only have the service they did.
2. If it is main dealer service history, it might be possible to download all the information (I know Toyota have this option), then you can print it all off.
3. Just start over and accept there's no service history.
4. You could try the MOT stations as they might have done the Service at the same time.

I'm not too familiar with Ford's but many cars have an electronic service record built into the car and have done away with the service book.
If however, your vehicle doesn't have this function and the main dealer sold it with full service history, I'd contact them and ask them if they have a copy. If it's got full Ford history they'll have it on a database and hopefully they might be kind enough to send out a replacement book with the completed servicing stamped in for you.

No books or anything with new Fords everything is downloadable.
Load the Ford AP & set that up, contains all service history for your car.
Can even remote lock, see tyre pressures & find car if unsure where parked & more.
Already tried that. No service history on the app. Load the Ford AP & set that up, contains all service history for your car.

Surely the dealership can’t have bought a car to sell with none of this information?
Contact the Ford pass AP folks, ask them where to start.
My new car arrived No PDI or anything, they gave me an email addy in Germany & then I got suppling dealer to send info.
They still told me the PDI should not show but I told them it does for my wife’s Puma & finally someone told the system what it needed to show & boom all fixed.
I don’t think the staff have a scooby with these modern systems hence no info passed on.

History is mis placed or part history or not provided with the car at all, Just have to be upfront with the customer and say it was provided to us with no history or we cant vouch for any.

Did the dealer / salesman state it was 100% full service history ? or did you assume ?
Unless you can get the sales person to admit they told you it was full history not much will happen here i would guess.
Salesperson has left the company, I’ve been speaking with the manager. Unless you can get the sales person to admit they told you it was full history not much will happen here i would guess.
I’ve tried to pull up the link for the advert when I bought it but it’s expired.
Looks like I’ve well and truly had my pants down if that’s the case. Probably my own fault for not checking but didbt think it would be an issue buying of a reputable dealer.

This, basically...Unless you can get the sales person to admit they told you it was full history not much will happen here i would guess.
If it was sold with FSH then you have a point, but it not then you can't assume it comes with the car.
Also, how did you not notice until coming to sell the car? Why would you buy a car without checking the service history?!

No need to be a smart arse about it.If it was sold with FSH then you have a point, but it not then you can't assume it comes with the car.

As mentioned it’s not something I would thought would have been an issue buying from a main dealer

You should have checked before the deal was done, not when you got the car.Sadly you can’t rely on anything you’ve told or that’s written in the advert, check and double check everything yourself.
This is the way.

Interesting, I have a 22 Fiesta and knew nothing about the app!
It's for you to check the spec and description match. I bought a year ago a car from a main dealer and before the deal I checked and knew it had no service history. It was a 67 plate car at nigh on 50k but clean MOT. I took the punt it had been serviced but not at the dealer and not paperwork was there. But I bought at a price I was comfortable with.

Yes, get from AP store, it took a call to the Ford Pass team to set it all up.Interesting, I have a 22 Fiesta and knew nothing about the app!
Shows lots of info worth setting up, warranty, breakdown, services, tyre pressures, state of oil, fuel level & you can remote lock/unlock via phone.
Dealer says car has FSH - you would expect the car to come with it. Yes with hindsight the OP should have checked there any then, but typically you buy from a dealer as you expect them to have done the due diligence on your behalf.
Unfortunately as many of the general public are finding out, dealers are getting worse and worse.
OP, hope you get this sorted.

OP you are not aline many people buy from dealers thinking it has FSH. Salesman tells them so, they trust him.
Happened to me at Toyota although when the FTSH turned out to be that old 'it was freshly serviced by us prior to you picking up' I rejected the thing and got a full refund.
The Salesman was upset about his commission and me saying I'd told him he had blatantly lied.
He tried to tell me a 4yr old car with one service IS full history as its time/mileage based.....

The main dealer wasn't Ford? Looking at them they have 2 offerings, Ford Approved Used and Ford Direct. Both state one of the inclusions being "Full service history"
I note you mentioned the ad had expired but do web archives maybe have it - like from here https://archive.org/web/

Sorry I’ve had a blonde moment. Wasn’t a main dealer, but a reputable nationwide one. I note you mentioned the ad had expired but do web archives maybe have it - like from here https://archive.org/web/
I’ll just have to suck it up and move on. Such is life!
