I have a 21yr old Seat Toledo V5, have had it since 2009, but it has quite a few issues, fading paint, thin and worn lacker, multiple electrical issues (had to unplug the radio unit due to it causing a dead battery), central locking has a lot of character, cruise control has character, dash is sometimes always on even when engine is off and key is out.
184k miles
Still love the sound.
There are only 79 of these left on the road apparently, so my question is, should I find a way to keep hold of it for when they become extremely rare?

Very interesting car. If you want to maintain it because you'll get pleasure from keeping something rare on the roads, then do it. If you are hoping that it will significantly increase in value, then I think you'll be disappointed. People would probably want the Golf with the same engine in preference to the SEAT and then they'd probably want the VR6 or R32 version of the Golf in preference to that (as the prices asked for them show).

Pretty much what I'm thinking.

It's unfortunate, cos I think the Toledo is a better looking car than the V5 Golf

Given that, I'm looking to upgrade

I like fast, comfy cars generally, need to be ULEZ compliant and give better mpg than my V5, which, around town, is frankly appalling 😆 had it down to 12mpg in Bristol once, even in moving traffic in Bristol I never see more than 19mpg
However, I have had it up to 44mpg on a run.

It is a great engine, very sturdy, low stress and a fantastic sound. So I'm looking for something similar but better.

Any suggestions? Cam Chain to the front

Why not check out the MK5 Golf R32, or the Audi A3 3.2?

A natural upgrade.

The BMW 130i is also a curio.

BMW 530i/535i/540i (2011-2016) in a small wheeled, non sport trim, one of the most refined cars around and quick too.

But those cars I suggested are comfy cruisers (just in small packages). The A3 and R32 are very lazy and comfortable.

Nice suggestions, but aren't Beemers kind of unreliable these days? VANOS seems to he a particularly expensive recurring issue

The F10 5 series isn’t a particularly troublesome car at all in 6 cyl petrol form especially in NA guise.

If happy with diesel Merc CLS 350 CDI is a good shout as is the Audi A6 BiTDI. I believe after 2013 or 2014 they were both ULEZ compatible due to meeting Euro 6 standards, happy to be corrected.

What's your budget? Auto or manual?

A 3-series pre-07 (iirc) before the introduction of the direct injection N53 engine might be an option.
