Brabus B40 S 800 | Spotted

Inclined to consider the Mercedes-AMG E63 the ultimate fast wagon? Consider this

You always knew what you were going to get with a Brabus-tuned Mercedes. It would have a big engine and an even bigger attitude, most likely painted black as well for maximum moodiness. This approach created a globally recognised automotive legend - because how could making V8 SLKs and V12 E-Classes not?

Inevitably, however, things had to change. In the 1990s, when standard AMG road cars were a bit limp, so Brabus had plenty of space to manoeuvre above them. Nowadays, Mercedes-AMG cars are so much more powerful and so much more capable that there’s less wiggle room. Potentially less demand, too, because the standard stuff is already so good. The Brabus product offering has therefore diversified in recent years, up to and including the Smart #1 EV and making ever madder G-Classes. Because the sky truly is the limit when it comes to modifying those.

But if the focus for Brabus is slightly different - or at least its portfolio much broader - the traditional approach is still on offer for those willing to pay for it. This E63 is proof of that; to all intents and purposes, it’s another black AMG E-Class on some aftermarket wheels. The reality is that more than £88,000 has been spent with Brabus, making this estate into an 800hp monster.

The most recent E63 was already an incredible mega estate for any situation, thanks to 612hp from a twin-turbo V8. For £20,000, Brabus would add nearly another 200hp with their own, boostier turbos, improvements to the ignition and injection mapping, plus a much ruder exhaust. It meant an E-Class that could reach 62mph in three seconds flat and 186mph, with 200mph surely possible with a bit more electronic jiggery-pokery.

But the original owner of this 2019 car didn’t stop at just the 800hp. Oh no. In addition, they splurged £6,450 on the Brabus Fine Leather Interior in Royal Black and Red, the Brabus module for the air suspension, the lightweight forged 21-inch wheels and a host of carbon bits, including the front splitter, rear diffuser, and mirror caps. There even looks to be a Brabus dog mat in the boot. The original list price (which would suggest Brabus converted this E63 as a brand-new car) was £198,000, a staggering amount for an AMG E-Class. But then Bottrop-tuned cars never did come cheap - you don’t get the reputation Brabus has doing less-than-stellar work.

Four years and 11,000 miles later, the B40 S 800 (that’s the rather prosaic Brabus name) is up for sale. It looks to have lived a pampered life, with precious few signs of wear inside or out. There’s no way, for example, this has been street parked, given the flawless condition of those wheels. E-Class or otherwise, who’d leave a £200k car anywhere near a kerb?

A discussion for another day, perhaps. What’s important for now is that the Brabus E63 is for sale, priced at £119,950. Which, predictably enough, makes it one of the more expensive E-Classes out there, even as a pre-facelift S213. But it isn’t the most expensive, believe it or not, as a premium is attached to the few Final Edition cars that have come to the UK. This one isn’t even the priciest Brabus E-Class on PH; that honour goes to this £140k saloon. Never before has 800hp been made to sound so sensible. What an alternative to an M5 Touring, too…

Silver wheels, clear glass and de badged and it’s all the car you ever need and not an SUV, if only it was lighter

I had a saloon version of one these - A Brabus E63 (admittedly - not the full fat 800 hp one, but one at much much lower cost without the interior and not quite so boosted - 700hp). It was a fabulously engaging car. Old school and truly exciting.

BUT and this is a big problem, as family run-around it was genuinely ruined by an atrocious ride. And I mean atrocious. With the Brabus wheels it felt like 911 GT3 as you bounced down the road with a baby and dog in the back!

Angry looks matched by a deep exhaust note. Saw one take off at the lights recently and it made my eyeballs vibrate.

can fully confirm that the ride on the PRE FL was absolutely rock solid, with the amg bucket seats its even worse. Ive ridden in and drove several , at lower speed in comfort, over small potholes it would feel like the suspension was broken! this was more apparent after driving my E55 Estate which has an infinitely more comfy ride. the post facelift was much better, but the front end styling looked meek and sound poor with the OPFs .

Some-one spent almost £200k, drove 11k miles in 4 years & then lost over £80k when selling. Wow! Cost over £7/mile just in depreciation. I haven't 'lost' a 1/3 of that on cars for me & the wife in over 20 years.

And I thought whoever bought my Leon new & sold it after 9 months had lost a lot of money in depreciation at around 55p/mile.

Still, that Brabus does seem an amazing car; just a pity it wasn't driven more.

Can confirm.

Funnily enough, was driving behind one of these yesterday for around 15 minutes.

It sounded positively evil...

Looks great, however I would just take a standard E63s with Stage 2 upgrades at half the price.

About £4k can get you 730bhp which is plenty...

I found the ride quality on the E63 plain unacceptable. Are these even worse or have Brabus improved things?

A Luxembourger in a Brabus is a combination I hope never to meet on the roads... Bet they get annoyed at that 300kph limiter every time they enter Belgium biglaugh
