Best prices on Train Tickets

Hi. Fancied a train trip to central London off peak but the prices seem mad compared with what II had seen a few years ago

Trying to find something that’s off peak cheap way of doing it rather than take the car

Just a day trip for shopping or lunch

Over 60 now if that makes any difference on railcards or discounts

Best route would be Runcorn to Euston but flexible

Seems so complicated

60 and over means you can get a senior railcard which will get you a third off. Unfortunately, in Runcorn, you're looking at the West Coast Main Line, on which prices are relatively high. Being in West Yorkshire I'd be going from Leeds on the East Coast Main Line which is relatively cheap. When I go on trips to London with a mate who insists on driving we stay at the Borehamwood Premier Inn and use Thameslink trains in and out of London on a daily basis, which is dirt cheap.

Book 12 weeks in advance on Trainline for best deals

Try looking on West Midlands Railways site for a ticket with them from Crewe to Euston - their trains are a bit slower than Avanti but usually a lot cheaper. Then look separately for a ticket Runcorn to Crewe.

All of the above are valid however for the absolute best price book 12 weeks ish out as already mentioned and also use the Trainline app, it gives good prices and also recommends "split save" where you buy 1, 2 or even 3 single tickets for each leg of the route

Its absolute madness!!!!!!

And for example Ive just booted up Trainline on my phone and put in a senior railcard for an imaginary journey on 12th Sept:

Trains leave Runcorn on the hour at 7,8 and 9am and take approx 2h direct
Theres a decent choice of return trains over the evening depending on how much time you wish to spend in the Smoke

Total cost £50-60 return

Looks like booking well in advance is the way. Go in September and we can both go and come back for a total of £107.

How complicated can they possibly make it.

We are off for a few days and thought afternoon tea in Harrods or something would be good; looks like the Garden Centre instead.
