My daughter's 996 has a faulty coolant temperature sensor. The sensor tells the dash that the coolant temp is 124 Centigrade, while my OBD reader shows ECT as 42 Centigrade. The car has been sitting for nearly 4 hours and I am certain that the ECT is not 124 Centigrade!

She has the replacement sensor in her car (coolant temperature sensor. Porsche Boxster 986 / 996 / 996 Turbo / 997 / 955 Cayenne S & Turbo ; Code · 99660641000) but no local garage has availability to fit it before her trip on Friday.

I have done this job on a 997 and it took less than 15 mins to unscrew the old and screw in the replacement, followed by topping up any lost coolant during the process.

She is scared of the intermittent rise in the coolant temp gauge so I'm being a good Dad and trying to find someone who would be happy to do this for her. Any fathers out there who can empathise (and who might like to earn £100 for themselves of their favourite charity)?

Alternatively, anyone know a mobile mechanic for Central London?

Many thanks

Surely you can just phone the AA or whatever breakdown service you have?
Just say it’s overheating.
They’ll send out an operative and he’ll fit the parts if she has them.

Looks fairly easy to do on a 997. I don't know how different a 996 would be...

Try mobileporschespecialist (can’t post links for some reason)

I used them on an older 911 and they did a good job

In recent years, the AA seem to be wary of either working on or recovering anything deemed to be 'exotic'.

There's a porsche specialist called RGA in Vauxhall. They'll be able to help.

ETA they're in some railway arches (which might put off your daughter!) but they know what they're doing. I had my old Cayenne serviced there a couple of times and there is always a range of cars there.

Thanks for the suggestion.

I ended up driving over and fitting the replacement myself on the street in London. Passers by looked amazed that someone would work on their own car for some reason.

Hopefully that's fixed it now.
