Was tidying some drawers out the other day and I came across the VEL renewal reminder for one of my cars that's not been used for a good few weeks.

Couldn't believe that I'd overlooked it, but sure enough when I looked in the back of the garage the VEL on the windscreen had expired on 300605.

I realise that we are now on continuous vehicle licensing and the fact that it's not on the road doesn't mean anything.

Can I remedy this at the Post Office or is there some other rigmarole I need to go through to sort it out?

You could apply for backdated SORN. Worked for me although it was only for a matter of a few weeks, not months.

You may consider going to DVLA site and sending them a SORN by EMail.

Post office may play ball and relicense from reminder form but that Licence will commence from the date the last one expired.

If you are going to relicense from 1.9.05 then you will need Form V10 (obtainable at PO) and your V5 together with the rest of your docs and a visit to a DVLA Office or send to DVLA. (No sure whether PO can issue under these circumstances). Relicensing will knock off the record of SORN.

V10 may contain a question as to use of the vehicle during the period untaxed. Be very wary on this as if you have you may have been subject to a silent check or other information elsewhere that you have done. Making a false declaration is a very serious offence.

Be also aware that once a month DVLA do a computor sweep and any vehicle found not taxed and not SORN'd after a month then they send out an 80 quid fine. How you have escaped so far beats me.

So get it Sorned or taxed pronto so there is something on your record.

I'm not trying to get out of paying any duty and am quite happy for the new licence to commence on 1st July. I want to use it next week so don't want to put it on a SORN

The car's truly not turned a wheel in weeks so it can't have been seen on the road and put on any database.

I just wondered whether the Post Office would relicence it off the reminder in the normal manner , or whether I'd have to go to the local DVLA office, which is some miles away .

Similar thing happened to me. I called DVLA and they said I wasn't able to backdate the SORN. I could renew from the next month but I was told I then had to send the back duty of £28.32 (made up of £170 prorata to 2 months) to a DVLA office to ensure that no fine was issued. At the time of renewing VEL two months late no fine had yet been sent but they said it would happen eventually if no duty was received.

I would ring them up to explain and either register SORN while you're on the phone or go straight down to the post office to renew the tax.

Get the details of the person you are talking to and refer to the call (including date and time) in a letter that repeats your grovelling apology and also states that at the time of writing you have corrected your oversight.

That way you get it sorted ASAP and have some documentary evidence in case they get heavy with you.

Update.
The Post Office wouldn't process the renewal in these circumstances so I had to go to the local DVLA office.
They gave me the choice as to whether to SORN it from 1st July or to pay the back duty. They were surprised that I hadn't received any other correspondence and they couldn't guarantee that a fine wasn't already in the pipeline.
In the end I elected to pay the back duty. They'd have to be pretty mean spirited to try and enforce a fine having got the duty out of me anyway.

We'll see what happens.

It infuriates me that the SORN has to be renewed each year. My RD350 will be off the road for years to come , I expect , and if I up once , I'll get a fine. Surely , declared off road until either seen and fined , or road taxed bought ?

I got caught by this big time - had a car to get rid of decided to donate to the police for use with a youth group (well it keeps the criminals off the streets right ?) - anyway I had lost the V5 but plod took the car away and said no problem dont worry - few weeks go by, tax expires renewal arrives and is consigned to the 'dont need this' pile - followed a few weeks later by an £80 fine . Quick call to the plod and DVLA - oh dear plod forgot to register the car oh well - thats £80 fine plus the £30 odd of unpaid tax please says the DVLA. No way out as the cars still in my name. Grrrrrr. Last time I do plod a favour.

This was mentioned a while back, I think the Act itself was quite vague, and it is possible that it is completely legal to write a letter informing them that it will be off-road "until further notice". I'll have a browse later to see if I can dig up anything.

That said, I have heard *many* stories of the DVLA just dropping fines if given a plausible excuse (eg. "I forgot".

Part of the reason for SORN is to make sure that the records are kept up to date. So for example if you decide to scrap the vehicle but forget to tell the DVLA, you'll keep getting reminders and that will prompt you to scrap it on paper as well as in the flesh. That said, if the vehicle has not been on the road since 1998 (that is, it was laid up before that time) SORN doesn't apply, apparently.
