Gatwick Airport Strikes

As title, workers at Gatwick are to strike for 8 days from the end of this month...

Heard about this on the radio earlier today with part of the report saying they need a decent payrise due to the cost of living, one worker who doesn't drive gets the bus to work for the first 2 or 3 days then has to walk to work as she can't afford the bus fare, I guess nobody that works there has heard of car sharing

Because parking at an airport is free

I mean how dare serfs stand up for fair wages... The nerve. Next thing you know they'll be demanding the vote.

If they use their chauffeur then they can just drive home and pick them up at the end of their shift and avoid parking charges.

One of the few good things around that part of the world is that the key bus services are cheap, regular and around the clock, so if you live close enough to get a bus it is a decent option. Cheaper & easier than driving. And walking would be a right pain for anyone to try as the routes just aren't great & the airport is sort of isolated by the expansion land & industrial areas.

Staff parking at Gatwick is literally the same parking as what the passengers use (just nearer the entry/exit. Albeit with different rates).

Erm... it is exactly the same parking.

With many other airports outside Europe, the staff parking would be even further away than the customer parking.

They average £12ph and had their pay cut because Covid.

Not that important - but at Gatwick I assumed staff parking is first on the right as you arrive in the bus at the Long Term parking. Anyone know if that's correct?

I'm a week away from flying from Gatwick for my honeymoon, and naturally the day we're due to come back is one of the announced strike days. Now, I absolutely agree that they should probably get paid a bit more. No argument there. That said there's precisely fk-all I can actually do to make that happen, there's no option on the BA site I can tick for "pay those guys at Gatwick more money", if there was you bet your bottom dollar I'd be ticking the st out of it, but there isn't so I can't. So it's only right and proper that after working my ass off for the past year or more to pay for this trip, I get a nice big question mark over it at the last fking minute. That's all I needed right now

Maybe it's about time they had their wages cut, its not like there is another airport nearby they could go and work at.
