Dudes

My (84 yr old!!) aunt is looking for a new telly. She wants at least a 28", possibly a flatscreen and the budget is up to £500 (the less the better though)

She asked me what she should go for, but to be honest I haven't got a clue really. She's quite trusting, so I don't want her to end up being fed bumpf by some sales goon.

Any ideas?

i saw a toshiba 28 inch widescreen in makro with stand for 189.99 exc VAT which i thought was cracking value.

dads had a toshiba for years and never had a problem.

its a normal tv for sale in makro, but normal CRT tvs are better quality as far as picture quality goes over those plasma and lcd tvs

hope ive helped

Why not just get the optician to up her prescription by a couple of dioptres and then push her chair nearer to the telly?

That will have pretty much the same effect and will stop her needlessly squandering your inheritance.

Looking through Digital Direct and there are some nice ones with built in digital recievers. Using this to check on which one. Waiting for ours to bite the dust before buying.

If 500 is here budget, just pop along to tescos or Asda. They normally have cheap, flatscreen jonnies... Pretty cheap to!

About 8 months ago I got a Sony 32” widescreen for £700 so you should easily get a 28” for £500. I would say buy Sony.

I don’t claim to know much about other makes as not had to change my last Sony as it wouldn’t break, I only got a new one because I wanted widescreen and bigger set

The last 2 times we bought tvs I went to the local news agents and picked up a copy of what telly and home cinema (or whatever it's called), turned to the back and looked for the "top 10 28"/32" tv list" and just bought one from the list. You can't possibly judge the picture from popping down to comet so I don't bother and just order one on the say so of the mag. I've been completely happy with the tvs I've bought this way. We recently bought a jvc 32" widescreen for just over 400 delivered which is excellent and suggested a 28" widescreen for my brother for just over 300 and that included a digital tuner which he's also very happy with.

I didn't buy any sonys because they don't seem to do any better than the tvs I have bought and they always cost loads more. Can't see the point is paying over the odds for a company that is trading on its name.

Of course

Our telly gives the impression its about to go pop the gets better for another month or so. Trying to justify a bigger one but need this one to die first.....maybe a little prod in the right direction might help as long as the missis doesn't spot the obvious.

^ ^ ^ ^ SOUND ADVICE ^ ^ ^ ^

No point in getting anything flash for your gran is there. Cheapest one in that top ten would be my choice.

Spend the rest on Werthers originals or something.

not trying to be funny - but as she's 84 - bu66er the features and even picture quality (to a certain extent) surely you should be looking at the one that's got the easiest to use features - and a simple remote...

Spot on. Also the bigger the buttons on the remote the better.

My mother (also 84!) was in exactly the position when her old TV went pop. I found a 28" Thomson widescreen in Comet for £250. Looks fine, great picture although the remote is fiddly with tiny buttons and writing and she has problems understanding it.

Matsui do a 'granny remote' for £6.99 IIRC - just 7 buttons.
