Fastest Van To Build Into A Camper With Garage
Discussion
I currently camp and carry motorcycles in my vito traveliner 3.0 auto which has been remapped to 240bhp - it's fantastic but I'd like something bigger
I was thinking of moving to a sprinter or crafter MWB so I could have a permanent garage and bed in the back
However I was shocked that they both seemed to have such poor engine choices these days - what happened to the 3.0 ?
Are there any other vans I should be considering ?
I've thought about the older sprinter with the 3.0 but they have rust issues
Budget 10K max for the base van I was hoping that would buy a 2010 onwards
Or do I just have to resign myself that I won't be able to overtake on A roads

Fiat/Ducato with the 2.3 140bhp will be the newest van of that sort of size you'll get for the money. It won't be a ball of fire, but it can't be a coincidence that so many motorhomes are based on them.
I manage to overtake ok in my 1.9 T5 that has 130bhp, you just have to wait for a decent gap!

the sprinter 4 pot units can be mapped up to the same sort of levels you are looking at in your Traveliner.

the splinter is lacking the independent rear suspension, and remember that your Traveliner is blessed with falling under the car speed limits, a sprinter is limited to 50 on A roads and only 70 on a Motorway. I have a mapped Vito and it's quite frustrating at times traveling with the traffic and being a good chunk over the limit. grrrr

They've all got puny engines in them these days. Emissions regs innit. If you want the 3.0 litre lump you're like 15 years old territory or suck it up I'm afraid. If you end up with the 2.3 that's in basically every Fiat these days, avoid the auto. It's absolute cheese and will leave you stranded in the middle of nowhere when it refuses to select a gear. The camper forums are flooded with threads about them. You won't be doing any overtaking in the 2.3 once you've got all your stuff in it, tank of water etc. There's more chance of me overtaking something in my 15 year old Citroen C1 with the aircon on.I was thinking of moving to a sprinter or crafter MWB so I could have a permanent garage and bed in the back

I came back from Wales last week and the number of people happy to sit at 45ish in an NSL is shocking
I probably overtook 40+ cars and most of those wouldn't have been an option in something much slower, I only saved 20ish minutes but I get frustrated driving so slowly
Better 20 minutes in this life, than an eternity in the other. I probably overtook 40+ cars and most of those wouldn't have been an option in something much slower, I only saved 20ish minutes but I get frustrated driving so slowly

Maybe look at the mk3 master / movano or nissan NV400?
I have a 2015 swb nv400, it's only 110 bhp but can be mapped using factory software to 145 bhp, and on to 175 bhp with a bespoke map.
The 2016+ bi-turbo will go further, and is ulez compliant.
As a side note, I'll be mapping mine to the 145 bhp and I expect it to go just fine at that, it's been fine touring around Scotland etc as standard, so the extra power will be a good bonus.

Personally wouldn’t touch an ex Ambulance. I volunteer with my local Ambulance Trust and when I call for a HOT 1 backup, I can tell you these things arrive very hot & smelly after 20min+ runs cross country at pretty high speeds for a 5t vehicle.
After 400k miles of that stuff, I’d say they’re near the end of what’s manageable.
