I'm the idiot that bought the Porsche 917 bodyshell which was shown on Pistonheads "You know you want to" feature (and was for sale on ebay) in Aug 2011 on this link: http://www.pistonheads.com/news/default.asp?storyI...
The complete project has been reversed engineered in CAD from oriignal drawings, thousands of photos, and around 20 books! We now are around 11000 hours into the reverse engineering project, and my Icon 917K was road registered 1st September 2019 after passing the IVA test 23rd July 2019.
The car has just under 6000 miles on the clock, and the most recent trip was to the Le Mans Classic and the Hotel de France where I meet a certain Derek Bell.

Take a look at our website, and the gallery page which has many photos and CAD images: https://www.icon917k.com/

Hi Pistonheads crew
A question I'm asked constantly, is what engine and transmission I have used. They came from a 1992 Porsche 964, which I bought back in early 2012, and removed the 3.6L Flat 6 engine and G50 transmission and scrapped the rest of the car. As I wanted to keep the air cooled link to the original Porsche 917's.
I would have fitted an original Flat 12 but the last engine that sold was €750K an original transmission is €380K, and a tad outside my budget! I can fit an original Flat 12 into our chassis if anyone has one spare!
Cheers Dave

We could fit many alternative engines, but the intention for me was to build a recreation that had the link back to the air cooled Flat 12's, so had to be an air cooled Porsche engine and transmission. Especially as the body panels came from moulds taken from David Piper's original 917/10, so visually they looked correct, not like some of the other recreations.
The Porsche Club have been very supportive of our project, and we are invited to display the car at various meetings, and also in dealerships.

Absolutely brilliant work. It is great how something that would theoretically be out of reach to the vast majority can be a reality with the advent of technology we have now. Most cars from the 70's and 80's are quite simple to recreate as long as you got the hours in you and access to decent millers and 3d printers.
I would love and 037 at some point in life but I feel that would be a retirement project!
