Caravan Steadies

I was pondering this today watching someone doing their caravan steadies.

How tight should they be down? Just touching the ground? As hard down as possible? Something in between? How do you know when to stop winding?

When the van is level. Simple.

Van should be levelled before lowering the steadies using ramps and the jockey wheel. The steadies should then be wound down to firmly touch the ground. You shouldn't be jacking the van up with them. On a small van you'll get away with it, on a large van you bend the steady.

"All the way down and one turn around" was what I was told - i.e down to the ground plus one more turn to make it firm.......its worked well for me over the years

Usually a couple turns after they hit the ground if fine, you can tell if they aren't right as your van is a bit bouncy inside so just tighten them a bit more

firmly in position and then the next day redo them as no doubt the soil would of compacted.

19mm in a electric drill is the fastest way to set them down.

Steadies are just that, steadies. All the levelling should be done with the jockey wheel and blocks/chocks under wheels. They are not jacks. I've replaced hundreds of steadies over the years from people trying to use them as jacks, normally resulting in bending the steady and sometimes even damaging the floor of the caravan!
