Personally, I am a fan, though I'm sure I get it wrong from time to time.

When the 'experts' have finished trying to pick my post to pieces, is there any rule any of you have not been sure about? You know, the wierd ones. I think this could be a useful thread, that's all! :)

Sir!
Your spelling of weird!

Weird how 'weird' defies the rule i-before-e-except-after-c...

It is not so much the rules as the terminology for them that I struggle with.

That was just a cunning ruse to see who picked up on it.

Are you really a fan?

Or is punctuation also a problem?

I'm a miserable sinner too, but don't mind taking the piss

When English is spoken I often hear these two errors.

'To try and do something' when what is actually meant is 'To try to do something'.

'I would of done it' when what is actually meant is 'I would have done it'.

I try not to be a spelling nazi, despite having studied English for several years but I do find it very hard to take seriously some of the posts I see when they're full of text speak, mis-spelling and appalling grammar. The worst ones are when someone is having a major rant about something and it's basically a load of gibberish. Surely if you want to come across as an intelligent debater then you would make an effort? Maybe it's just me...

How many times did you proof read this before you posted?

BTW Shouldn't Nazi have a capital N?

I struggle spelling words with multiple double letters in such as accommodation(SP?) and ommission/omission.

You always compare one thing 'with' another never 'to'.

And of course once you've got it right, you then have have to type it in correctly ......a Vixpy1

You always compare one thing 'with' another never 'to'.

Also, when you compare one thing with another you might find that one of the things is different from the other. It will not be different to, or heaven forbid different than, the other.

Try downloading Google toolbar if your spellings a bit off. It's got a handy checker that'll correct forum postings. Works very well IMO.

Pet hates:

"Loose" instead of "lose" - This is pandemic.
"A phenomena" and "A criteria"
"It's" instead of "its"
Txt-spk
"Yourself" instead of "you" - A favourite of estate and recruitment agents
"Far superior" - May not be incorrect; it just annoys me
