My '87 928 S4 Auto is making a graunching noise on steering and is booked in at Malton next week. In the meantime one of my mechanics mentioned it might be the power steering fluid which may be too low (it gets quieter when the engine revs increase.

So my question is, what power steering fluid should I use to top it up?

Your help would be appreciated, especially since this week the 928 is the only car I have, I left my current dealership today and don't get my new company car till Monday.

Use ATF Dexron II or III. Widely available at any garage. Do not overfill the reservoir...

He's right, do not use PSF (Power Steering Fluid), because the 928 requires ATF (automatic transmission fluid). Check the fluid level on the Power Steering fluid reservoir. It has a dipstick built into the cap.

Thanks for the replies, I've just picked up some Dexron 3 ATF from Halfords, nice and cheap thanks to my trade card!

.

As the others have said, its low fluid level, when you have topped it up, turn the steering from lock to lock 3/4 times to bleed all the air out of the system.
