I was running a polling station today,
first time the punters/voters had to bring ID,
everyone did,
I struggled looking at some photos to see the similarity between the 8 or 9 on the photo and the hippomonster standing there in person,
even allowing for a bit of weight gain, (about 100% in some cases), the photo must have a lot of touching up,
not sure you could travel on a passport that looks nothing like you.

These days - with deepfake etc. - "the camera never lies" is very far from true. (Although I acknowledge that doesn't apply to personal ID).
Some people are very photogenic - some aren't. I have a (female) friend - she's pretty enough in real life, but is stunning in photos for some reason. I always look one step up from Quasimodo - getting decent pics for dating profiles was very difficult! In her ID photos, g/f looks like it's a police picture and she should be holding up one of those ID boards....
