Was doing some normal daily stuff in the Panda the other day, residential streets keeping up to the limit and had one of those (awful) Bentley suvs hanging off my arse.

Now I know its the owners choice to buy one, but why?
What does a high end exec vehicle such as the Bentley/Top end BMWS,Jags/Audis/Mercs etc do that say a Kuga Vignale cant?

I don't know why the SUVs are so popular, but for luxury cars in general it will be due to the quality of the product. Some may be swayed by the badge, but mostly they will simply be designed and engineered in a different way for a different purpose. You can throw tech and some nice materials at a car, but that won't make it as nice as a car that is designed from the ground up to be a luxury product. You would notice the difference in every aspect.

It's like saying why buy a Sony 4k OLED TV, when a Beko 720p screen can show the same content.

Cure small man syndrome. These cars are especially prevalent in developing countries where the people tend to be more ostentatious.

I am fond of the utilitarian SUVs, Land Cruisers (not the Lexus one), Pajeros, Defenders, etc.

What advantages does this motorcar have over, say, a train? Which I could also afford.......

  • Better high-speed stability.
  • Better aerodynamics.
  • Quieter inside the car, with a separate saloon boot instead of an open load area letting the road noise in.
  • Exec saloons look more “dignified” to a lot of the wealthy boomer crowd.

Why do you need a Kuga Vignale? Surely a Dacia Jogger does the same job? Don't really get your point OP...

The point is choice and freedom to buy what you want. Of course we are equally free to critique your choice whether that is down to make, model, emissions, size, weight, styling etc.

People like to buy the best they can afford. Some people have the need to buy the blingiest car possible, wear clothes that advertise brand or a large chunky jewel encrusted watch, others want low key and discreet.

In a word, status. You choose a car like this simply because it is one of the best ways of showing others you are wealthy and successful. It is also a way of reassuring yourself you are wealthy and successful, by providing the comfort and style you feel you deserve.

Of course, owners may believe they have bought it for the actual qualities of comfort and style that they appreciate and enjoy, but that’s just because they aren’t aware of their own psychology. There’s really no practical reason to have one vs a more mundane car unless you run a chauffeur or wedding business.

By contrast, truly self-confident people like OP don’t feel the need to play these games. They happily drive a small or cheap car that does the job and don’t care whether others judge them by it. So if you do own a high end luxury car, a course of therapy around self-image could save you a fortune.

Note: in case not obvious, not being entirely serious here, but then ‘many a true word said in jest’

I've never been in a Kuga's Vagina, but driven plenty of Bentleys.

Go try one, report back (I mean the Bentley, but either would be a worthwhile experiment for you).

Come on, you’re on a car forum. What do you think attracts people to buy one? I’d guess at luxury, ride, silence, equipment, looks, quality, noise (or not), space… for starters.
eta I’ve googled a Kuga Vigilante now. The only petrol auto is a 1.5 eco boost.

The Kuga with the 1.5 ecoboost (as per the Fiesta ST) is a perfectly decent motorcar. I imagine the Vig-nail version add all the Bells and Whistles you could want.

I'm not sure it is a thing of desire, and as said, a Dacia Duster will also be perfectly decent for half the price.

You could spend the same money as a new Kuga on a used S-class Merc and waft around in Luxury instead.

As with all purchases from washing machines to bicycles, there is a law of diminishing returns as you move up market, the trick is finding the sweet spot such as a Skoda Superb or Merc E-class that gives you decent refinement at an affordable price.

I mean I understand why someone would get a Lotus or Mustang, I just didnt see what a 7 series would achieve over a 3.

My car has been off the road for the last week (neighbour managed to reverse into it while it was in the drive)

I’ve been driving around in a Hyundai Kona hire car.

Let me put it this way: I live in Cornwall and work remotely for a Leicester company. I can happily drive to Leicester in my own car, jump out and be ready for a day of meetings before driving home again afterwards too. That’s in a BMW 5 series.

I wouldn’t be happy to do the same in a Kona.

People are free to drive what they like providing they do it in a safe and courteous manner. I love cars like Fiat Panda’s but also high end luxury cars. SUV’s and 4x4’s are personally not my thing, with the exception of the new Defender which I think is great. Each to their own.

I’ve been driving a Kia Picanto hire car on its door mirrors for the last week. We own a Skoda Citigo. They’re great. Easy to park, nippy little things. But wafting around in a luxobarge can be very relaxing.. if only those poxy little econoboxes would GET OUT OF MY WAY wink

Depends on the journey. Driving around town on your own a Panda is probably better. Driving family and luggage a few hundred miles more space and creature comforts would be appreciated. Towing a boat you'd want a bit more weight etc
