Hello,
I’m looking at a 2012 Virage that’s at a main dealer this week, it comes with a years warranty (not the Timeless one but a dealer warranty, extendable provided the car is serviced via AM, which it would be).
I currently own a 993 Carrera 4 that would probably eventually have to go as it wouldn’t make sense to keep hold of several cars (I’m great at buying them, not so good at selling them!)
AM aren’t interested in a trade which is fair enough as my car is too old for them.
When I spread my net a bit wider, I can also be into a Ferrari 360 or a 328 for similar type of money, these have between 3 and 6 months in house warranty. Some of these dealers will p/ex, a bonus if the cost to change fits which is really my only consideration.
Having a couple of younger kids, I’ve also looked at a lovely Mondial and this is currently the favourite, private sale though so no protection (seller is 100% genuine enthusiast but the car is private sale).
The Virage is not only the lowest cost of 9 in the country today, but it’s also a good spec (though not manual, but that doesn’t bother me as such).
I know everyone is different and this is an incredibly blessed situation to be in, but what are your thoughts on these choices?
These are radically different cars and I could also change more frequently in future, but do prefer to stay with a vehicle if it ticks the boxes.
Another option is to stick with the 993 that I’ve owned 11 years and it has been a wonderful “do it all” type car, but I’m in the middle of a mid life crisis effectively and wondering if I should try something new.
2 or 4 seat is the consideration, 2 seat isn’t an issue but it would get less use than a four seater, so it loses some points.
I’ve never been in a position to buy a ferrari before and all the cars I’m looking at 20 plus years old, the 328 getting on for forty, the Mondial hits tax free status next year as a bit of a plus.
The Virage I could use for work occasionally, have the comfort of dealer cover to an extent and would be tempted to tour Europe with the kids next year to create some memories.
One concern is that it’s effectively an older V12 and what that might look like in terms of ownership costs versus the others on the list.
I would have to borrow some of the money towards the more expensive vehicles but expect the Mondial would 100% be covered by the sale of the 993, or I may keep bit for a short while to ensure I’ve made the right decision.
Any thoughts from owners of the Virage, how it might compare to a DB9, if a 360 would be a more exciting proposition etc?
Every car I view of each model I just get sucked in, all of them appeal in different ways.
Speaking to one ferrari independent though, he said buy like an accountant, be critical and most of all, ensure the car is right before you commit.
One last point, one of the 328’s, in glorious condition, is a write off earlier in its life but the independent dealer I respect highly has had it and sold it twice. My concern would be an incredibly narrow market for this car is made narrower still by the marker against it.
