Very sad news which prompted me to contact the bowel screening helpline as I have been experiencing, for several months, symptoms which could be interpreted as bowel cancer.
I'm 51 and don't qualify for a kit as I'm too young - they are gradually reducing the qualifying age so, I 'may' qualify when I'm 54.
Suggested I refer to my GP but was aware that getting an appointment may be difficult and that it would then be at the GP's discretion as to whether I am issued with a kit.
Let's hope it's not bowel cancer, eh.

Get a private GP appointment if you cannot get in to your NHS one. I'm 51 and don't qualify for a kit as I'm too young - they are gradually reducing the qualifying age so, I 'may' qualify when I'm 54.

I think you can get them for £100 or less.

Get a private health check. I had the all singing dancing one last year through Benenden, although their 'premier' one covers checking for blood in your stools, £269 for non members. I'm 51 and don't qualify for a kit as I'm too young - they are gradually reducing the qualifying age so, I 'may' qualify when I'm 54.

Off topic I guess, but very important for us middle aged men to get a check which we sadly can't rely on the NHS to provide.

If you have a family history of bowel cancer they can do the screening and colonoscopy earlier than 54, when my mum died from it I had a check at 30 and again at 40.I'm 51 and don't qualify for a kit as I'm too young - they are gradually reducing the qualifying age so, I 'may' qualify when I'm 54.

Sad news about George, always seemed a nice man.
As already mentioned, very sad to hear. Always came across as a very decent and genuine guy, and an interesting background and career.
Hopefully he will leave some sort of legacy and has helped raise more awareness of bowel cancer, encourage more people to be aware of the symptoms and get tested.

i recently had a minor symptom appear that could have been many things or nothing
the GP saw me and sent me for tests .. it turned out to be lung cancer .. out of the blue no history, never smoked etc.
i’ve had a few rough months with the treatment but they caught it early enough and i’ve just been told this week it’s dormant and in remission
trust your gut and body and don’t be fobbed off
One of the great newsreaders, and partly testament to that was you didn't see or read gossip/rumours about him, you didn't see him in the Jungle or prancing around a ball room. In fact, aside from his terrible illness you didn't hear much about him outside of newsreading. He just carried on and did his job without airs, graces, or pretentiousness.

+1.He's been some places, seen some sights and experienced a lot over his career.
Some of the events he's covered, I imagine, would always stay with him, good or bad.
He seems to have been a very thankful and thoughtful person too.
