Noob help with will
Discussion
My mother is experiencing some health issues and we need to change her will.
I have spoken to the solicitors who wrote her current will, but being solicitors it seems it will take weeks to modify.
She is having an op next week so we need it changed before that.
Anyone know what options we have please?
e.g. can we just change it ourselves - I have zero knowledge on this topic?
Thanks in advance

Did my late mothers with a DIY kit online. Straightforward all passes to next of kin etc. Several lines, less than a page and correctly witnessed. Never had an issue for probate. If bequests are more complicated then seek advice.
Rather than modify with a codicil it might be easier to just get your mother to write a new one and rescind all previous versions.

Who is "we"?
Why do "we" think her Will needs to be changed?
If the old girl is heading into hospital you're at risk of any quick amendments of the Will being challenged if there are family tensions and she doesn't have proper independent legal advice.
In summary: DIY sounds risky to me.

thanks for the replies all, from the sounds of it the best plan of action is to try to get the Solicitors to hurry up.
It will need to be your mother that contacts the solicitors not anyone else in the family. The solicitors may be moving slowly as they don't want a contested Will, due to coercion, on their books, they will be naturally reticent to take instructions from a family member rather than their client.Armitage.Shanks said:

I read a Will once that someone did themselves after copying the previous one, he had added "My property in Claygate I leave to my first wife (named her) and my property in Dorset (holiday home) I leave to my current wife"...or along those lines. I pointed out that he had sold the property in Dorset and had not updated to the new Cornish property...things like that can cause big issues.Rather than modify with a codicil it might be easier to just get your mother to write a new one and rescind all previous versions.

I appreciate your concerns but the Solicitors have made it very clear that they need to speak with my Mother on her own and understand her wishes.

OK, I was just going from your OP it sounded like you were trying to do the "instructing". If time is of the essence and the sols are being slow then I would ring around some other local ones and tell them of the situation/urgency and see if you get a bite.I'm just trying to facilitate and speed up the process.
