Quoted in reference to the lorry fire on the M25 (30Aug05), Sgt Simon Ward said, "If he had stopped in the fast lane it might have been very different."

Two points, Sgt Ward:

1) It's the "overtaking lane", not the "fast lane"!

and

2) If he had stopped in the outside lane, no doubt you'd have booked him for illegal use (Motorway Traffic (England & Wales) Regulations, 12). [I assume from the photographs that the MLW exceeded 7.5 tonnes.]

Perhaps he meant if the tanker had stopped in the outside lane, people would have piled into the back of him, swerved to avoid him etc.. and there would have been a multiple pile-up?!?!

(Benefit of the doubt)

"IF" he had collided with an artic full of TNT things may have been different!

Presuming the driver was still alive after the initial explosion, why he hell would he try and get out to the central reservation FFS?

It seems to me that quote is completely out of context.

The majority of the public know it as the fast lane im assuming thats why he used the term.

Considering the fact that the driver managed to get the lorry onto the hard shoulder safely rather than panic ditch and run i think he did bloody well. And as for sticking him on for stopping in the fast lane, somehow i think not.

Was the driver in lane 3 or perhaps the driver had a choice. get it to the nearest side of the road and run for safety which is possibly why he said hard shoulder rather than fast lane.

Um, why do we call the outside lane the outside lane when it is closest to the middle, surely it should be the inside lane?
